Spyderco vs Benchmade

I prefer the Manix2. It's just a tank of a knife and feels like a solid robust tool. I've owned a few full sized Grips, but just can't get over the cheap feeling handle. Almost feels like a toy. The mini Grip on the other hand, I love. Manix2 wins this debate for me hands down.

I agree with all of this. I would like for my Manix2 to have a little bit weaker spring, otherwise I like everything about it more than the grip.

For some reason right now the Manix2, G10 scales and all, seems to be cheaper than the Grip with its cheaper scales. I have not seen a FRN knife that is nearly as smooth as the Manix2, that is one of the reasons that I like it better.

The ffg Manix 2 has better handle material , better steel, and fine toughness for the same price as the Griptilian. The Grip has the better lock for my use. But despite the feel of the plastic handles, don t underestimate the toughness of the griptilian. It is amazingly strong. And lightweight. Overall, I would get the Manix 2 for the s30v steel. But the Griptilian has been a fine edc and work knife for me over the years. Just a bit too expensive now.

any G10 manix without a doubt..

i've had some with slight horizontal play but the ones that i held on to are fixed blade solid and swing freely when disengaged (most likely the way they all should be).

the axis lock seems weaker to me and most i've owned developed all types of blade play.

Just realized I never answered the question, the griptilian is plenty tough, but the manix 2 does have better materials, and of the spydercos Ive handled probably better finish. So get the manix unless you prefer the feel of one over the other.

Been wanting to try a Manix2 LW. See how it compares to the Grip in terms of feel and solidness in the hand.

Anyone own both that can chime in?

I like both knives and also have several of each. Hard to compare, but if I had to choose only one of the two it would be the Manix 2. Both have good steel and are made of good materials with good F&F. So the reason that I would choose the Manix 2 is simply that the Manix is one of the best feeling knives-in-hand that I own. Far superior in that respect to the Grip.

That said, the feel of a knife in your hand is a very personal thing. If you can, you should try to examine each in person and see which fits you best. Both are really good knives, IMHO, so you can't really go wrong.

Best of luck on your decision. :)

The Manix LW is my favorite Manix. The light weight polymer handle is fantastic. Love the weight and feel of that knife. As I said above, I prefer the Manix to the Grip in general and the Manix LW is best of the best in terms of "soundness in the hand".

And significantly less expensive than the Grip.

Of course, JMO. :)

This thread reminds me that my next purchase is probably going to have to be a manix or endura, especially since I bought the sharpmaker :p

I currently own both a 550 grip and Manix 2 XL, but have owned and handled plenty manix and grip variants in the past. The standard manix has better materials S30V > 154CM or even the D2 grip, the M4 in shot show grips is better, BD1 in LW manix is worse. The FFG manix blade beats pretty much any grip blade, except possibly for the Ritter grip although IMO once you compare a sabre grind manix, the 550HG grip has a thinner edge and slices better. The grip has a wide very comfortable and light handle, but G10 variants feel far more solid, Manix handles are thinner and heavier, but more robust, with a more versatile grip with both choils, better jimping, better opening hole. The BB lock has less movement, and a stronger coil spring, so much harder to open with 1 finger, stronger detent to hold closed. I pinch it from both sides, it locks securely and smoothly, the grip axis lock is easier to work, and the pin is the stop when closing, which is a little softer and less likely for the blade to bounce partially back open than the manix which hits the tab on the choil against the spring housing. Both are great, both have their benefits and detreactors, IMO FFG manix or a G10 550/ritter grip are the way to go, great blades, great handle ergos, and good locks.

Have you ever had or heard of the Omega Springs break in an axis lock

the griptilian has plastic, hollow feeling handles which do make it feel cheap in comparison the the solid feel of the g10 manix. the manix is a much nicer knife in my opinion, the manix2 and manix xl are excellent for what they cost.

Unfortunately I don't carry tip-up, but otherwise this would be the easiest choice ever. Everything is better on the Manix for less money. Better steel, shape, grind, handle material, handle shape, feel. Or a plastic knife with lesser steel. For me there's no comparison.

It happens on rare occasion, although never on any of mine. If it does, Benchmade will replace them for free, which is good, but they won't send parts like KAI and Spiderco, you have to ship the knife back, which sucks.

One of the things I didn't mention is actual edge length, the large handle and 50/50 choil on the manix add a lot of length, my manix2 XL and 550 grip have the same 3.5" edge length, although the M2XL is far larger, 1" longer and 1oz heavier. The Manix blade is a little thicker at the spine .125 vs .112, but at the edge, it's twice as thick, .040 vs .020, the gentle curved edges are very similar shaped despite the differences in overall blade shape. The Manix slices well despite it's thick blade, the 550HG slices better because of it's much thinner edge, and because of the high hollow grind, it stays thin for a good bit behind the edge too, pretty easy to see the much narrower bevel on my grip vs M2XL, both sharpened to about 40 degrees inclusive. Granted it nearly doubles the price of the grip, but a set of Putman scales dramatically improves the feel, instead of cheap hollow plastic, it's solid grippy G10.

Where did you get those scales?

I couldn't decide so I bought a manix2 and the rei special edition grip. Both are fantastic knifes. But I find myself carrying the manix more as I prefer it's lock system. So much so that I am thinking of selling the griptilian
