Ive also been thinking about getting a spyderco or a benchmade. Which company do you get more knife for the money? I was looking at the d'allara or police or something. Are these good knives? Benchmade im not so sure about.

The search function is your friend. Anyways, it's apples to oranges imho, depends on which feels and looks better to you. Both are well made and good values. Both have models I feel are overpriced. It's best to try both, then decide. I decided I needed a better paying job and less bills for college to buy more knives! :D

Both make outstanding knives. But with Spyderco you definitely get more knife for the money. Great knives for under $100.

If TSHTF, I was never involved in this thread.

IM(very)HO, you can't lose either way. From what I've seen in your collection so far, these two companies would be my choice overall. Please don't misunderstand me, I think you've made some EXCELLENT choices thus far. I would just prefer BM and Spyderco over the other brands. You may want to see if there are any stores nearby that have these models so you can really see which ones would suit you best. Whichever you end up with, rest assured in the quality of BOTH companies.

BTW, what's everyone's opinions on Cold Steel and Dark Ops and what's the best way to defend yourselves??? :D

I have entirely too many of both. They both make excellent knives. Benchmade has some advantages, axis lock and D2 steel. Spyderco has some advantages, usually cheaper and I find the hole easier to index quickly. Benchmade makes assisted openers, autos(even 1 OTF) and a larger selection of fixed blades. Benchmade definitely has a wider range of offerings. I can't really say which one I prefer. I own more spydercos but both are on my person daily. It really comes down to personal choice and finding the model that suits your needs.

I own both , and enjoy both . Both give great value , and have classic models . At their pricepoint , the Delica and Endura are unbeatable . In the larger folder arena , you cant deat the Benchmade 710 , as a Military folder the Benchmade 520 is hard to beat .

Ignoramus has, in my experience, the correct answer. For those with experience between the brands, we already know our preferences. It will serve you very well to handle a wide selection of both brands to see what you like and don't like. I don't think you can go wrong with either. Have fun!

Both companies make great knives, but they have different design philosophies. I seem to have more Spyderco knives... but you'll have to see which models suit you best. All good, just different. ;)

I like both companies and designs from both of them. I own and have owned multiple models from both companies as well. Only one company uses the Axis lock... so that's where my money tends to go.

What is SO good about this axis lock? Ive tried a couple out and use my grandfathers every once in a while, i find nothing great about it. I do like that new ball bearing lock they have on the D'allara though. I tend to buy liner locks.

It's a pretty good system, if you edc'd one for a while I think you'd like it. It took me a while to get used to it and I can remember seeing/handling @ gunshows and thinking it would never be better than Frame/Liner for me. Not putting my finger in the path of the blade is one thing. Being able to open and close with a single hand position is another. Axis = quick as or quicker than an automatic/assisted once you get used to it.

You can get a mini-grip for $40 (ebay) or a large grip for $50 (right now @ gpknives, sheepsfoot blade). That's a pretty small investment if you want to tinker around, and they're extremely popular knives that I think you would be able to unload quickly if you didn't like it.

Popping a tub of popcorn now...

Yeah, I'm with you. I just popped another brew.

I don't think either company is "better" than the other. I just think they are different and that they both make high end production folders. Spyderco feels a bit more non-traditional in their designs. Benchmade, a bit more traditional. Both with exceptions.

Lots of fantatics on both sides of the fence are gonna be ready to stone me for this. Good thing the beer is cold.

Lotsa salt and butter on the popcorn... Its already been said but, both companies make great products and they will also stand behind them. They also make a wide range of styles and prices. I've had axis lock knives for over 10 years and have never had a problem. Very strong and they only get smoother with time.. I don't think you can go wrong with any of the products from either company.. JMO

I've spent my share of time with both companies, tried to ride the middle ground and what not, but I'm not going to place nice to not hurt others feelings anymore:

Spyderco is better, hands down.

Much better company, first of all. Sal is just an awesome guy, constantly trying to improve his designs and materials and interacting with users, etc. Awesome warranty and customer service. Constant refinement. I could go on.

Now, the knives. They are just thought out for use better. They cut better, feel better in use, don't fiddle around with fancy liabilities like Benchmades do. You get more performance for your money form Spyderco, period.

Benchmades are flashy. They look nicer to a lot of people. That's really all they have going for them aside from Balis (butterfly knives). That is the only place BM gets the nod. Their balis are awesome.

Yeah, im sorry if i didnt use the search as im sure this has been brought up before but i didnt want to bring up an old topic, id like to interact with what comes out of mine. Now, i do like the axis lock, but i prefer liner lock, i dont know if you could convince be any different. If i like the knife i could suffer with axis, but part of the knife is the lock. I do like spyderco knives as i think they are awesome work knives and they have some interesting designs, some ugly, but very functional. I like benchmade also the blade designs and such but as far as what im asking is this. Who has the more reliable knife/better blade materials/least amount of warrantee send ins/all together knife for the buck. I know its still a toss up but there has to be a combo of all of that to come out with one company.

for my perspective and spyderco is family in a sense I love their form and spent a lot of time there. I enjoy seeing their innovative designs. There are downsides to spyderco's most notably blades being off center when closed more so than other companies I think. as far as being functional though I think they may be near the best in the class. the opening hole in the way that it is engineered with the rest of the knife is always well-thought-out.
However there are two deal breaking differences between benchmade in spyderco for me one is that benchmade chunkier four knives of similar strength to spyderco's not true in all cases and there are definite exceptions in both companies. The second much more finite is spyderco uses around a 30 inclusive bevel which in my opinion makes their knives initially an overall sharper than bench made which is is around a 40° bevel there are some benchmade like the skirmish that I would be much more fond of if they came with a spider fine edge which I think is appropriate for modern steals.

I find most of benchmade designs to be fairly similar even when done with custom designers the ruckus is a notable exception to this. and I'm anxiously waiting for a picture of the Bob Lum benchmade collaboration if anyone has such an image please post it.

Hmm, now i need to make a choice. I hate choices. I came into this thing either wanting a spyderco folding knife or a victorinox swiss tool and then threw benchmade and leatherman into the mix. Now i need to decide between my first two choices. Im a pain in the butt :-D but please bear with me i like going into the purchasing bit with a lot of knowledge before i buy something i may be unhappy with. Can anybody help me?! Any questions you could ask me like a knife wizard lol to help me find my final product?
