Spyderco vs Benchmade?

Your breaking me down slowly FMB. I've read your posts praising the Rift, so naturally - I believe you to be a honorable knifenut. I'm almost ready to pull the trigger on that very knife.:)

I have a feeling the can of worms you have opened might spill over soon. :D

I say they both rock. but Spydies are better. LOL :D

I really like both companies about the same..... That being said.... I'm more likely to buy Spyderco blades these days because of Benchmade's decision not to sell to online retailers anymore..... that keeps the prices high... and I don't think that many of the Benchmade knives are worth the high price tag...

They no longer sell to wholesale distributors so a store has to buy direct and they have to have a store front. Many of the online stores also have a B&M store you can walk into so they still carry them. They did implement a MAP pricing policy like ZT and some other brands. But a store doesn't have to sell it for that price, just advertise it. I can easily find Benchmade knives for the same price as before the new policy. Some stores require a phone call and one that has been discussed quite a bit has a coupon code to get a lower price.

I also read that Benchmade is over priced quite a bit. But if you spend $130 on either brand you are going to get comparable materials and craftsmanship. Benchmade doesn't have a lot of lower end economy models like Spyderco does, but the Griptilian line is a pretty great value for a AXIS lock knife.

And as far as lock strength the AXIS lock from Benchmade and the ball bearing lock (very similar to the AXIS) and compression lock from Spyderco are going to be strongest.

I haven't been knife shopping in a while and have a Benchmade Rant. I wondered why all the knife stores online had very few or no Benchmades. I'm not sure if I like their policy or not. It certainly makes me want to check out other makers. Thanks for posting these.

For me spyderco wins, due to the fact that I dont think there are any spyderco designs that I wouldnt mind owning or at least giving a try. I do like benchmade, but only certain models. Also benchmade is no longer selling to online retailers so the prices have gone up quite a bit, and I dont think they are worth their msrp.

It is definitely not the most popular policy but it doesn't effect me too much. It might take a couple extra minutes looking around to find the best price but I don't mind. They mainly did it for the knife stores because they would complain they couldn't sell them and compete with the online stores. So MAP pricing and no wholesalers is what they came up with. If it somehow keeps some mom and pop knife shops in business for a few more years I don't have a problem with it.

I plan simply carry it around for self defense and just cases that a sharp knife would be useful. It would help for it to be razor sharp too. I don't plan to screw up trying to sharpen a $200 knife.

LOL

Seriously? How may people will fall for this, I wonder?

I like benchmades style. I also hate thumb holes.

my benchmades have come with a less than spectacular edge, though. However, nothing a few minutes on the sharpmaker can't take care of.

Can't go wrong with either.

I really like the axis lock on the Benchmades. They even have a few models that have an assisted opening (if you like it) mechanism paired with the axis lock, and they just make for a fast and powerful open.

At first, I didn't really like the look of Spydercos. But once I held and used one, I was sold. They are easy to use, and have some of the best ergonomics bar none.

I used to be Benchmade, but switched to Spyderco after I found them to be a better value, sharper out of the box, and a better company.

Benchmade, I don't want my handles man out of some sissy plastic :P

Seriously though they both make good knives and as a few people had the honesty to say it boils down to pure preference. Do you want a hole or a thumbstud? I'd say spyderco definitely offers cheaper knives, but I like the benchmade quality and service. You WONT regret ordering a knife from either of these companies though. I will say they both offer different steels but Benchmade also has the gold class knives which are closer to customs and have a much better fit and finish than anything spyderco puts out....BUT there is a FAT price tag on those. Benchmade also has assisted knives, NOT SURE spyderco does. Axis lock is awesome, but you can wave the spyderco's and some have the wave on it already.

If you are willing to spend that much, save a couple dollars more and buy a Graham custom fixed blade pocket knife. You will absolutely not be disappointed. Scary sharp, f&f is amazing, fit more comfortably in the pocket than some large folders and a fixed blade is the strongest lock there is lol. I have a pocket kukri and it's with me all weekend long always no matter what else I carry. There not far from what you want to spend.

I went on a tear buying both brands. I've carried nothing but small fixed blades and sold them all except a BM 710, 2 BM 940s and a 10700 Nagara. Kept a Spyderco Endura 4 G-10 & a modified Centofante 3.

They're both excellent companies but I stuck with my favorites in each since I couldn't carry all of them and can't get my RAT Izula out of my pocket!

If a large Sebenza wasn't $400......which brings you a whole BUNCH of knives to choose from...striders/XM-18's/Customs. I wish Sebenza's were $250-300 for a large I could PROBABLY drop that much if I saved up for a bit.
