Spyderco vs the Dryer

I transferred three of my jeans from the washer to the dryer and set it for a 60 minute dry cycle. I heard a bunch of clanking so I opened the door, pulled the wad of three jeans out, felt and looked around (but did not check every jean/pocket individually) and found nothing amiss. Put the jeans back in the dryer and re-started it finding the clanking to be substantially subdued so I figured it was just the buttons clanking on the dryer drum.

Came back a couple hours later and the dryer had stopped at the 20 minute mark. Opened the door to find this:

The knife had opened then got driven into the plastic near the lint filter stopping the drum cold. The molded plastic in this location is very thick and I'm amazed at how deep the knife cut into the plastic.

I was able to turn the drum backward enough to take the pressure off but could not pull the knife from the plastic. Ended up having to use a hard rubber faced hammer to hammer it out. Figured the blade would be tweaked for sure given all the leveraging and hammering, but it is just fine.

I thought the electric motor or the dryer belt would be burnt up but the dryer still works fine. Must be some sort of switch or breaker that shuts it down in the event of a jammed drum I guess.

I will be checking all pockets in the future... :D

That must be the the most awesome pic I have seen in a long time! :D

I really gotta get me a Sage now. :p
Thanks for sharing.

Very very lucky lol. Your a lucky person. I'm always forgetting what's in my pockets bit I hope I never forget that.

This is good proof that liner locks are fine if made to high standards. It also shows that tawainese stuff isnt crap! Double whammy!

Love linerlocks.

It's better it happened that way than if it opened and layed hidden in the clothes. Grabbing a handful of that blade could be a large problem.

Wow! Definitely a good reminder to check your pockets before throwing pants in the dryer. That's kind of shocking to see how deeply the blade got stuck in there.

Wow, pretty incredible. I got a chuckle out of that. How's the knife holding up after that?

It's just fine, the blade remains perfectly centered in the handle when closed, locks up fine, no play. I put a little oil on it and put it back in my pocket.

i wish i could find spydies in my lint filter :grumpy: ;)
great story, and funny pic. thanks for sharing.

That's one of the best unintentional torture tests I've ever seen. The Sage is clearly tougher than your dryer. I'm surprised that it wasn't all scratched up, though.

I've washed my FRN dragonfly at least a dozen times over the years. It still looks and acts like new. I always forget to take it out of my change pocket.

I cannot believe that it didn't cut holes in your clothes. Did you give them the twice over to make sure?

Great pic!
