Greetings all. After 8 years of carrying a Spyderco Delica day in and day out...I lost it. So, I'm looking to replace it with another Spyderco. I would, however, like to find one a little sturdier than the Delica, and one that does not rely on a liner lock. Does Spyderco make such an animal? Thanks in advance for any assistance.

I guess it depends what you want to be sturdier. If its the blade, then the Native is a good suggestion. It you like the Delica blade but want a sturdier handle, then watch for the carbon fiber Delica due out in the next few months. If you want everything sturdier then the Gunting or Lil' Temperance are about as sturdy as folders get - and both have compression locks instead of liner locks.

Hi TheGreatGonzo.

Depending on what you mean by "sturdier" you could be spoilt with a wealth of choices.
If it is a sturdier handle you are after any of the stainless steel handle series will do (Delica, Endura, Police, Native, Harpy or Progrip).
If it is a bigger badder blade you are after then you have the Endura, Police, Native Chinook or Lil' Temperance.

If it is all around sturdiness you are after then the Chinook or Lil Temperance are probably the dog's doodads. For general carry and use you couldn't go wrong with the Lil' Temperance, be warned, despite it's measurements it's bigger than it looks.

Welcome to the forums, Gonzo!

Spyderco produces a couple of lockbacks like the above-mentioned Native or the Chinook.

And there's the Compression Lock. This one can be found in the Gunting, for example. The Gunting is specifically designed for SD, so if you are looking for a utility-only knife, this might not be the best choice. I believe there is at least one other Spydie model with the Compression Lock, but I can't recall the name right now. Maybe ask over at the Spyderco forum.

How about a stainless steel Delica II, stainless steel Endura, stainless steel Police, or stainless steel Native II?

Or the aluminum handled Ayoob, or the G-10 Police?

Lock-backs rock!

Thanks for all the guidance, folks. Instead of getting one knife, I ended up getting three. I caught a "going out of business sale" at a small sporting goods store (really a hunting/fishing store, more than anything else), and I picked up the following:
Sypderco Gunting
Benchmade Griptilian
Kershaw Ken Onion Scallion
I only intended to get one knife, not a collection. However, since I was able to pick them all up without exceeding my original spending limit for one knife, it did not seem like a bad idea. The little Kershaw is great for dress slacks on Sunday morning! Thanks again for all the assistance, and if anybody wants to tell me I'm a moron for one of the above choices, feel free. I'm still learning.

You are absolutely not a moron. GREAT choices! You're right, the Scallion is good for dress clothes, the Gunting is good for defense, and you don't get much more utility that the Griptilian. All have good locks. You should have no problem with any of them.
