I started this thread http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php/1165192-spyderco-warranty-clarification/page1 a few weeks ago because I read in a few forums that "disassembly voids the knife period" after reading every word of there warranty on the spyderco website and on the boxes my knives came in I couldn't find "disassembly voids the warranty period" anywhere as a matter of fact there warranty states DAMAGE CAUSED BY DISASSEMBLY isn't covered. Anyway Sal the owner stated disassembly does indeed void the warranty period even though the warranty doesn't state it. Before I purchase a knife or any product I read the warranty I am a little bummed the warranty I read BEFORE I purchased my knives isn't accurate. Finding out after I spent money that the warranty on there website is wrong kind of rubs me the wrong way. It feels sneaky and I don't appreciate not being upfront about there warranty on there website. Sal stated in the thread when someone files a lawsuit he'll address the issue, Which as a customer I feel is also shady. Why not be upfront with it? So people such as my self who read up on products BEFORE we purchase a product can make an informed decision.

I agree with Barman.

Something to consider, even if you void your warranty, you can just send your knife off with $25 and they'll fix it. So don't bellyache over the vague warranty.

I've voided the warranty on my Southard flipper in every way possible. The Ti is anodized, scales dyed, washers damaged, bearings lost, frame screws stripped, and barrel spacer damaged and stuck. I sent it in with $25. The knife came back to me after 3 weeks with the bearings replaced, washers replaced, barrel spacers replaced, and frame screws replaced. That $25 covered for parts, labor, and shipping. That's pretty sweet service if you ask me. Sure their warranty is easily voided, but it's the case with most production manufacturers.

I will be buying from another company but the purpose of this thread is to inform potential customers of spyderco that there warranty on the box and website are not accurate and that it will take a lawsuit for them to be upfront about it.. I must be the only one who has a problem being lied to.

The majority of people with Spyderco knives do have some understanding of the warranty as written or implied. In the last 5-ish years I've rarely seen anyone at all refer to Spyderco as a "shady"entity with business practices to boot. It's been quite the opposite in my experience. Sal has been an ardent supporter of the community for as long as this forum has been open, one of the first (if not the first) to have a subforum here. I would also guess that most folks on the forums here or their own factory forum have a pretty good idea of their warranty as it stands, and the risks vs rewards associated with buying their products. If you are choosing to feel as if you were lied to, that is a shame. I for one will not try to change your mind, as you are clearly an adult and can think and decide things for yourself. Your point has it's merit and is duly noted in a couple places here already. Those interested will be able to find your discussions and inquiries archived should they share the same concern and curiosity.

But, there is no shadiness going on here, most every company has a warranty and not every one has the same processes and procedures. I can think of a few companies that are offering items with poorer quality and much less transparent than Spyderco has ever been. These same companies (which will not be mentioned) have been hit and miss for years on end, poor to no communication, and have in some cases released and shipped products with the poorest fit and finish some folks have ever seen. Spyderco has a reputation that has been built for decades and it takes a lot more than being accused of lying to tarnish it, I hope this has no ill effects on your own reputation. IN th end variety is the spice of life, and we all just buy what we like and can afford.

Spyderco is one of my top two favorite knife companies, but I do feel they should change the warranty that comes with the knife to reflect what they tell us on the forums.

Most that buy Spyderco never participate on a knife forum, so they have no way of knowing they void the warranty if they take their knife apart.

I have several local friends that have Spyderco's that never participate on knife forums. I will make sure and tell them the warranty that came with their knife is incorrect.

I never take mine apart, so it doesn't affect me.
Spyderco makes the best knife for the money IMO, so this is a non issue with me personally, but those that do take theirs apart need to know they have voided their warranty.

Rev I've read many of your post before you even new I existed, I have seen you make logical posts. Please understand I want people to know the warranty has been changed and the box does not reflect that.. I don't know what you call changing a company warranty via an interment forum but as others have noted its not official what's on the box that counts. Why would it take a lawsuit for a company to be upfront about there warranty change? Do you feel its OK for customers to read the warranty on the box thoroughly and then disassemble there knife and be told your knife warranty has been voided?what's the big issue with customers being able to read a true warranty with no changes made that they don't know about?the words I use such as shady I used because that's what comes to mind when something has been done that effects customers that they are not being told about. I respect your opinion rev I mean no disrespect but creating a policy change in a forum and not the website and box is unofficial, not truthful, and to be told it will take a lawsuit for transparency speaks volumes about character I don't need to tarnish anyone's reputation they do it on there own.

You haven't been lied to in the least and there is nothing shady going on. If you do not understand the warranty, Spyderco will be happy to explain.....as they apparently already have to your dissatisfaction:

BASIC KNIFE MAINTENANCE:
Insure safe operation by regularly inspecting the knife’s interior for lint, obstructions, etc. Clean the lock well and inside the handle using a toothpick, hot water and detergent. Rinse with fresh water, dry inside and out and lubricate steel components with oil/silicone. A sharp knife makes cutting easier and safer and lengthens its usable life. Like any tool, knives do wear out.

While I somewhat agree with you in thinking the warranty should be the same on the box, website, and what they tell us online, I don't agree with the way you are going about this.

Sal has done nothing to tarnish his reputation, and he has done quite the opposite here and on the Spyderco forum.
IMO Sal gives more to his customers than any other owner, and I think most know that. I'll gladly keep buying from a man with such good character.

We also don't know the reasoning behind what many companies do, but I trust he knows exactly what he is doing and why.
I would guess they will still fix your knife if you didn't damage it while taking it apart, but I would bet they get knives back often that have been taken apart and sent back in pieces. Maybe he just wants to discourage people from taking them apart, and I can't fault him for that.

Hey karda does cleaning a knife constitut repair? If there is zero damage before and after disassembly what was repaired? And it specifically states DAMAGE DUE TO DISASSEMBLY exactly not DISASSEMBLY VOIDS THE WARRANTY PERIOD. I don't know what's so hard to get here they made changes to there policy on a forum and not there website and box lol the customer who doesn't go to blade forums will never read the words DISASSEMBLY VOIDS THE WARRANTY PERIOD because what its actually says as is DAMAGE DUE TO DISASSEMBLY VOIDS THE WARRANTY. Customers who buy spyderco knives shouldn't be told the warranty on the box is wrong?? When the words DAMAGE DUE TO DISASSEMBLY APPEAR IN THE WARRANTY IT IMPLIES NOT DAMAGING THE KNIFE DOES NOT VOID THE WARRANTY. IT ALSO STATES THE CUSTOMERS HAS SPECIFIC RIGHTS BECAUSE OF THERE WRITTEN WARRANTY READ THE BOTTOM OF IT.

Will it make you happy when they officially change the warranty wording.....and also make it so that any knife that has been disassembled will not be warranted regardless of whether there is damage or not? That is where you are heading with this. By persuing this issue in this manner, you may end up with a solution you may like even less than the one you have now. Are you willing to be responsible for that?

Also, since there seems to be a lengthy discussion of this started by you in the Spyderco forum proper, this thread is redundant and unnecessary and any discussion should be directed to the original thread here:
