So im newer to Spyderco knives and have been wondering about this since I first seen it. Whats the purpose of the wave on Spyderco knives?? Is it just for looks? does it help flip blade open faster than hole? I really dont have the answer so could someone let me know please.......Thanks

It functions like an emerson wave opener, so when you pull it out of your pocket the wave catches on the seam and it deploys.

The wave is intended to catch the material of your pants as you draw it out, thus opening the knife. Emerson was the first to use it I think and Spyderco uses it on a number of models under the "Emerson Wave" name.

It's mostly a defensive type thing.

Really handy if you have only one hand to work with also. Kinda like an assisted open that you can use where assisted open knives may be a legal issue?

Thanks guys im going to have to get one and try it out.....maybe try and hunt down some videos because im having hard time seeing how that works in my mind

Like everyone else said it is an Emerson wave and functions as so. It opens the knife when you deploy it from the pocket. So you can open a knife very fast.

It doesn't get discussed much, but be very cautious here - people who are not used to and trained on the Emerson opener can easily encounter accidental openings, with potentially very serious injuries resulting. Spyderco used to make Delica and Endura trainers with the Emerson opener - I think they were discontinued, but if you can get your hands on one of those you could learn a lot.

The Matriarch Wave and the KaraHawk are the only current production waved models.

I am 99% sure the Delica and Endura waves are still current...

ETA: They are both still in the 2014 catalog, and on the site...

Edit #2: The P'Kal (and trainer) are also still current production...

Not correct. The Endura, Delica and P'Kal are all in the current production line. Sal Glesser has recently posted elsewhere that the demand for the Emerson-opener Endura remains strong.

Everyone has explained the wave well. Try out a delica or endura.

You could try out the zip tie mod on one of your current spydercos to get an idea of how the wave works-look it up.

I stand corrected! Im glad Spyderco is keeping them in production. Now if they would bring back the wave trainers. If you cant tell I really like waved knives.

Double amen to that. The only other wave trainers I know of off the top of my head are genuine Emersons, and they're quite pricey.

I love the wave feature.

I wish I had it on my southard because when I'm in the walk-in freezer Looking for stuff sometimes I only have 1 hand free and it's great to pull a knife with a blade ready.

I have a matriarch 2 waved and would like it on more of my folders I take to work.

The wave also works quite well as a bottle opener, very handy.

It does make the knife bigger in the pocket though, and it can wear away at the edge of the pocket if you put it on the same pair of pants frequently.

Try it, you might love it, the Endura and Delica (the waved models I have) are great knives and good values.
