Spyderco: Which one should I get?

The co-pilot with the unknown handle material has a G2 stainless balde (?)

Is that micarta on the co-pilot? Nice little knife.

I'll jump in again. I have a Centofante III and a Native III in VG-10. The CIII, to me, is like the Gray Caly Jr. Super thin blade which makes it a great slicer. The caly is "pointier":), the CIII has a longer more shallow depth blade. The Native III has a thicker, shorter blade but the handle is much thicker, so makes it easier to use if you have to apply a lot of pressure. To me, the Native III is much more versatile than first meets the eye:) The shorter blade makes it a very fast handler and it's very pointy - I use mine occaisionally to trim stitching thread in my leather work. Not to worry, though, it slices and dices as well. I would put the CIII into more of the Gentleman's folder category and the Native III as a "worker". They will both get the job done, depending on what you intend to do. For me, I don't use my Native III that much. I will use my CIII or Caly Jr. on the slicing type jobs, but use my Paramilitary when I'm knocking down heavy cardboard. Now, in saying that, my Native III is one of the forum leftovers - blue FRN/PE with no engraving, so I'm a little reluctant to beat it up. I may re-visit the Native, if and when Wal-Mart gets them in up here:)

I am not sure what it is. I purchased it at a gun show many years back. I mostly use it as a money clip when one could till fly with one on the airlines. In the last few years I have been clipping it on more and using it cutting ability.

The handle seems to be a lightweight material over aluminum. Could be macarta. Anyone know fo shor?

thanks Gord. I appreciate the info! You helped me eliminate the Centofante. I think the "worker" Native suits me better.

I really like VG-10, and S30V is awesome. I'm looking at the ZDP189 Caly, since I need a sub-3" folder for school. I just finished emailing the guys at Island Tactical, they say they still have a lot in stock.

I'd really like to see a ZDP189 Delica, though.

Ya I like the paramilitary and the Impala but now I am seriously looking at the calypso jr.

Can anyone tell me about the Calyipso Jr ZDP-189 blade metal. Also how do you like the red handle FRN?

The paramilitary is an amazing knife. As all of us do, my mind often wanders to the next knife I'll buy...and then I'll pick up my para and it'll all disappear. Don't get me wrong, I still want more knives, but I've found THE knife. I'll get more to do other things and for other reasons, but for the all purpose take with me anywhere EDC, it's the para.

Great handle (G10, long enough for big hands like mine, I love choils for safety and comfort), the S30V leaf shape blade cuts like nothing else I own, the compression lock is arguably the best lock ever designed...I could go on and on....definitely pick one up in a store and get a feel for it...it's not for everyone, but man, for a lot of us, it actually shapes itself to our hands, gets attached, and we're forced to carry it forever after.

I wasn't sure about G10 pre para, but I've been brutal with the stuff and its invincible. I really think you could drop a brick on it, rinse it off, and it would look new. It's even grippier wet. Flawless.

i have 2 caly ZDPs. Have had no problems with the ZDP-189. You can rub the blade across your finger and feel the difference in the metal. ...it just sounds different too...kinda wierd..no problems though.......p

Try their Santoku. I just received one and it's a great knife. Maybe not an EDC but it's definitely an ED! ;)

Okay I went to Wally-evil today and picked up a Native. Since this was my second trip to "look" at the knife I decided to buy it before I went a third time to gauk. I still don't like the handle design and the tip up position of carry, but I bought it anyway. Mostly because it is what most reccomended and I hate losing out on a good deal.

Now I can relax and buy a spyderco that I really want. I am still considering the Calypso Jr with the nice red scales. I really like the look of that knife but it would not surprise me if that knife becomes a safe queen and the Native is my ED carry knife. Basically for $40 bucks for a knife i don't like, it will see some hard use.
Go figure.

BTW all three Wallyworlds in my immediate area had the Native. I called two of the stores in advance to see if they had them in stock and the clerks told me no. I asked if they had the new cardboard display and they said yes but they could not find the spyderco native on it anywhere. I went down and had to show them where it was on the display.... I wonder if this is why so many here say that Wal-marts don't have them in stock . The clerks can't even read their own displays much less know what a spyderco is.

I've been carrying a plain Co-Pilot for more than a decade, it's a great little knife for everyday chores. I've never come across the 'G-2 stainless' anywhere else though, does anyone know more about it?

They can read them, they just don't and would just rather say (over the phone, anyway) that an item is out of stock, not available or 'I don't see it'. More than once I've called and asked about a knife only to hear 'We don't have it.' One day, I called a Wally's and heard the same. I went to the store about 30 minutes later and asked to see three of a particular knife. Those 'We don't have it' items somehow appeared.

If you want to spend a bit more than you did on the native go with the chinook II. With its great lockup and sturdy but extremely sharp time it's my fav EDC at the moment.
