Spyderco Wolfspyder Initial Review

I've only had my Wolfspyder a few weeks. Mine has been "scandi with microbevel"ed on the SM, but only because I use the SM for everything.

It's small-ish, stout and VERY well made. I think it fits the bill of pocketable, outdoorsy knife perfectly, but in an almost understated way.

It has thick PB washers and has broken in very nicely. It can be flicked open, and shaken shut with the lock release pinched, (although the separate detent spring means it won't drop open or closed like the Yo2 or PM2).

I am a little puzzled by the accusation from some quarters that this is Ray Mears "cashing-in" - which is daft when the only (new) source is his little online shop in the U.K., and hardly the distribution deal to maximise sales. When you handle the Wolfspyder you can tell just how much thought and expertise has gone into it.

Quick update.

This has been my daily carry and I still think this is an excellent knife. As Chris mentioned above, this thing is a great every day general user.

In my pervious review I pointed out it wasn't designed with a lefty in mind. Thanks to a couple of suggestions from fellow BF members I replaced the pocket clip with a shorter deep carry titanium clip.

The shorter clip makes the knife a little more comfortable and of course it helps it disapperance in my pocket. Here are some pictures.

Original clip.

Perfect!^
I'd love to try a Wolfie. I bet a XL version would sell better.

You should try one Lycosa. It's a design that works and the shorter clip really enhances it.

Alright guys… my last update. I'll try to return in a few months but for now, not much else I can add.

I’ve had the Wolfspyder for a couple of weeks now and I’m still sold. This knife fits my hand well and while I haven’t built a cabin with it, I’ve cut down some heavy cardboard, cut some zip ties in a an odd location and while I almost had to torque them rather than cut them due to their positions, the thick scandi grind was up to the task. It hands easier EDC tasks just as easily.

I added a shorter pocket clip and that works better for me as it allows for a better purchase with my left hand. It was a nice addition and it makes the knife a little more lefty friendly.

As far as the knife, it works better for me than any of the others I own. I’m not selling the rest of the herd because I do like to rotate but the Wolfspyder has really captured my attention. I think it’s size, the thick blade stock, scandi grind and unique shape really make it damn near a perfect EDC.

If you get a chance, definitely try one out. It might not be everyone’s style, but I think Mears and Spyderco really crushed it with this design. A Wolfspyder XL (hint) might be a hell of a seller if it were readily available on this side of the pond.
