Many Spyderco classics available so it really depends on style, purpose, etc., rather than blade length. I'd say start with the Delica, Endura, Dragonfly, Stretch, etc. Older classic designs, evolved through the years, proven reliable and reasonably priced.

I'd go with one fo their classic models (Delica, Endura, Military), or one that has some feature that's not found on knives from other brands like H1 steel (the Pacific Salt is awesome) or a compression lock (Paramilitary 2 or Yojimbo 2).

If you give us a better idea of size, materials and price point it will be easier to narrow down our recommendations.

In his defence, it's not a permanent modification. He can remove them whenever he wants.

All of the Spydies recommended so far will certainly serve you well , OP. I vote for the Manix2 and Yojimbo2. Both are hard to beat for the price.
