Okay y'all, it's time to get my feet wet with a Spyderco....I've never owned one and now I want to find out for myself all the good things everybody has to say about them.

That being said, help!!!

I've got the catalog, and wow, so many choices...so here's what I'm thinking..

I'd like something "middle of the road" pricewise around $100 dollars..

I'd like something kind of hefty, not ZT0200 hefty, but maybe something sorta Blur hefty...

All suggestions appreciated!

Thanks

IMO, a FFG Endura or Delica for around $50 would be a perfect introduction to Spyderco. In fact, since your budget is $100, just get both. :D ;)

Or, if you want to buy one ~$100 Spyderco rather than two $50 ones, the Sage 1 or Paramilitary 2 would be my top choices.

Finally, welcome to the wonderful world of Spyderco! :)

EDIT: Saw the addition that you want something "hefty". In that case, I think the Manix 2 would be a great choice.

I got my feet wet with my first delica just two weeks ago and I'm saving up for my next one.

Its a really good small knife that I use for all my cutting needs throughout the day. Great EDC :)

Sage would be right around that price range. It seems that Spyderco doesn't have a whole lot that hits that mark. $25 more or less and you start having more to choose from it seems.

Dude, in your price range you definitely need to check out the Manix 2:

It fits your "hefty" criteria quite well--it's not a tank, but it's definitely robust. Feels great in hand, has a sophisticated locking system, has good steel and G10. It's a little on the heavy side, but it comes in under budget around $80ish street. Good fit and finish too. My roommate has owned four and only one had a tiny itty bitty minor detail off (little bit of blade wiggle when closed, pretty common, no big deal).

You should be in for an enjoyable experience.

So many great choices.

The majority answer you will probably get is Military. It seems on the top of a lot of folks list.

Paramilitary2 would be a great choice....and they seem to finally be available again.

Stretch - at first an odd shape, but it rapidly grows on you.

Gayle Bradley - OMG the f&f will knock you out. Tad heavy, but it is nice! Definitely fits you "hefty" desire.

Caly3 or Sage CF - If you prefer something more of the gentlemans folder type.

Police3 - If you don't mind a loooong knife. I avoided it for a long time because I thought it would be too big, but its becomeing one of my favs.

Just a few thoughts, hope it helps.

Oh, and have a little fun and throw a Tenacious in the order just to get impressed by how much knife you can get for ~$30.

I paid $102 bucks for Caly 3.5 with G-10 handles and I couldn't be happier with the knife - Great F&F and it's the perfect size EDC for me.

I Still can't figure out how Sal Glesser and company got an extra half inch of blade in a knife that is virtually the same size and weight as the Caly 3.

Get the Gayle Bradley. It's VERY solid. If you don't mind ZT 0200 weight, the GB should be fine. The steel is tough and holds an edge, the high hollow grind slices like no other, and the fit and finish is unmatched in production folders.

Gayle Bradley gets my vote if you want a bomb-proof work horse. Very good feel in hand, with a beefy handle and huge liner lock. Ti framelock thick, but steel. Fit and finish plus the quality of the CPM-M4/heat treat should knock you out. It's a solid knife that fills the hand, but carries very well. Should not appear intimidating to co-workers or the general public, either.

I also vote for the Para 2 or the Manix 2.

Both have amazing ergonomics, locks, blade steels and of course, G-10. You can't go wrong with G-10!

You will love both of these knives and if you don't, you're crazy or just not able to realize quality, one of the two.

I really like the Mili and absolutely love the Para2, but I think their tips are a bit too fine for me to consider a hard use folder.

The Para (1) I sold to a friend years ago eventually lost its tip.

For around $100, go for the Manix 2 or Endura 4 (any flavor).

for $6 more than $100 get the Paramilitary 2 (when they get back in stock)

for close to $40 over $100, get a Military or Superleaf.

Or combo it up with an Endura 4, and a Dragonfly 2 FRN. The Dfly 2 FRN is my favorite knife right now. It's small, but the way it fits in your hand, it feels much bigger than it is.
