Spydercoites or Benchmadians?

I may be wrong about this, but over the years I've gotten the impression that a lot of people gravitate towards Benchmade folders, but are so-so about Spyderco, or vice-versa.

I like Benchmade, and have several of their fixed blades and folders, but only have one Spyderco -- an older Harpy -- and for some reason just never have warmed up to Sypdercos.

Actually, I'm a REKAT fan, but, alas, they haven't made them for a while.

I don't have enough Benchmades to judge fully, but I think of myself more as a "spydercoite"

they're both great knives, though.

I think you're right - when it comes to folders, majority are Spydercoites or Benchmadians...I myself am a Benchmadian...when it comes to fixed blades, though, tough to categorize.

I agree that both are well made knives, but somehow the Syperdco's don't "sing" to me the way Benchmades do. Dunno why.

My usual edc is a mini-grip, but I have several other models that I alternate with. I really like the nimravus cub (the full size model is okay, but i like the smaller version better) and the Outbounder. Bought a fix-blade Griptilian, and was lukewarm about it.

For a long time I was iffy about the butterfly but I've warmed up here lately. I have had a Rant Bowie for a couple of years but in the past week, I've picked up a 710 and a 943. Its looking like Ive got some of both bugs in my pockets.

im the opposite.

i currently own one benchmade, and have owned many which were subsequently sold/traded.

both make great products, i just prefer spyderco. i'll also caveat by saying it is only in the last year or so that i have gotten the spydie "bug". prior to that, my folders were either emerson, crk, or customs.

I've been both and am a Spyderco customer for life.

Might want to add Kershaw to the major categories, too, as they're quite on the rise and distinctively different from both Spyderco and Benchmade.

I have never owned a Kershaw. I have friends who swear by 'em, and I've handled them, and they do seem to make a nice product. I need to buy one to check 'em out.

i had previously been just a benchmade fan, having only owned 1 spyderco (an endura) i was not SO impressed. But, I just got a spyderco CF Military and WOW.

My lesson learned is that i now like both. Why would you limit yourself!

By numbers, I have a lot more Benchmades than Spycercos, but I can't say that quality of either is an issue.

Mostly for me, some of Spyderco's designs are a little "wild" and not as many of their folders are ambidextrous, and as a southpaw that's kept me from buying a few.

I think I' m more of a Spydercoite, actually Spyderco is my most bought, and favorite brand.
But I do have quite a few Benchmades too that I like VERY much.

Both are excellent brands!

i prefer spydercos for classy, high end stuff (CF caly 3, for example) and benchmades (like the grip or mini-grip) for a user.

I love them both, and a few kershaw designs as well but I am a Spyderco man for life. Their designs didn't appeal to me visually but when I actually started carrying them every day and using them... all I could think was wow. I've since grown to love the look of them in a strange way. Every bulge and choil and hump and hole is there for a reason. I love benchmade and kershaw as well but in my experience nothing carries slimmer and lighter or works harder than a spyderco. I wish Benchmade would offer a griptillian in a slim handle design in G10 or CF or something, then it would be a serious EDC contender for me, but I'm not gonna pay $80-90 for those aftermarket G10 handles and void the warranty in the process.

I own and like both, but I like the way Benchmade knives feel in-hand. I feel like both are excellent cutters, and both have excellent blade design (in fact, I prefer Benchmades with the "hole" as opposed to the thumb stud).

The only thing about Spydercos is the play in their lockbacks. I know people say it's all right and that's the way they are supposed to be designed, but I don't think I ever got over the initial shock of noticing play in my Spyderco lockbacks.

That said, I have a Spyderco Tenacious that is excellent, and I think I might be getting a Paramilitary for Christmas. So, I guess maybe I'm just not a fan of lockbacks.

I think that both companies make great knives. The 3 Grips that I have are real work horses, however, I must give the nod to Spyderco for their excellent variety, build and design. IMO, they are an engineering 'work of art'.

I bought a bunch of Benchmades, then Spydercos...then I found Kershaw.

Now for me, its 90% Kershaw, 7% misc, 2% Benchmade, 1% Spyderco.

I do want to try one of the Spydie compression locks, and I still love Benchmades 154CM, but Kershaw has great steel options, really unique features, tons of options, and the price couldnt get much better. I see them head and shoulders ahead of their competition in final value.

I like them both

However I would like to see Spyderco make more American knives.

We are officially in a recession and soon a depression. And I will not support outsourcing if I can avoid it.
