Spyderco's ATS-55 Blade Sucks...

I know of someone who had a Cricket in just such a steel. He was tracing out an outline on a wood door with the tip, and it snapped off. This was long after the blade play developed, which was complaint number one.

I told him to send it back. He called the next day to say that Spyderco wanted $10, and to him that meant that instead of standing behind the product 100%, they were only willing to stand back there for about 80%. So he told the company to keep it. He's never had another.

Now, I am only relating the tale here. Maybe you think that the knife was subjected to abuse. Maybe you think that the terms of return are just. I'm just adding my feedback to this post. If you don't like the story, don't kill the messenger.

I don't know what to say to your friend. Shipping alone would have cost probably $5 just to get it back to him and I know that the Spyderco $10 fee covers the shipping so he would have been paying $5 for a new blade. Doesn't sound so bad to me. Also, if they wanted the $10 that means they decided that it was his fault that the tip broke and not a faulty product. I broke the tip off of my numbered Gunting. It was an accident but it was still my fault. I sent it in and for $10 they replaced the blade, re-engraved my number onto it, and shipped it back to me. I was pretty damn happy.

A couple of points here.

I own a number of blades in different steels and I have to say ATS-55 rusts like D2 steel for me. All my ATS-55 blades from Spyderco have exibited rusting and pitting even with a generous ammount of M S Tuf Cloth on them and a good clean. Other steels like ATS-34 and BG-42 have never susted for me, even stuff like 1095-1075 and M2. I honestly think that the ATS-55 used by Spyderco is a ruster and you HAVE to be VERY careful with it:( . Still it does hold a very good edge and takes a fantasic edge as well. I like it overall, rusting aside.

$50 is NOTHING to spend on a knife. Even as a graduate looking for a job, I still consider $120-$200 as the 'reasonable' price point for a knife. Still as ?I am skint, I can't afford $50 right now either:mad:! When or if you get involved with our hobby, you will soon see the DElica and Endura blades as AMAZING value.
