Spyderco's First Traditional Knife

OK, so some folks had their pee pee slapped in Traditional but... goodness.

I don't know if anyone is familiar with the Gnostic Gospels, the fodder for the Da Vinci code moneymakers. I read one years ago, the Gospel of Thomas I think and I thought "Well this is a wonderful list of sayings which maybe should be included in the Bible."

Then, a few years later I read the Pistis Sophia, another Gnostic text and found a bunch of gobbledygook looking at crystals and pyramid power in the rear view mirror. And I got it.

They had to draw a line somewhere.

Someone's always going to disagree and the line ain't perfect. But it's a good line mostly.

Actually, I would be curious as to what the "Traditionalists" would think. We never thought about what "classification" of knife it might be. The design served a function and was a bit different than other knives that could be used to serve the same function.

They might be a bit nervous about a Tactical Traditional Tag Team match. (with alliteration)

Interesting thread. Thanx for sticking up for us Stays Sharp. Appreciate.

Based on what I'm hearing, I would say that the "Roadie" is not a traditional knife.

It's easy to open, safe to use, has gimping on the spine and the finger choil, has a finger choil, uses a synthetic scale material, has a removable pivot, has a trade-mark round through hole ( So it is not confused with other brands ), has a "Double Dent" for convenient safe nail-less opening, has a large kick to keep the edge from hitting the back spring, uses a modern stainless alloy and it has a cute "tick" on the handle and the blade. ;)

I admit that all of the above features are subtle, so I can see where it might be confused as a closet traditional, but it's not. In fact there is probably nothing quite like it so it really isn't a tradtional anything. :D

...And thank you for helping keep the knife hobby interesting and forward thinking. Keep marching to your own beat, it's served you (and us) well.

You have zen like qualities in how you react to criticism and trash talk. Responding with class to those without any. I'm sure there are many more things you can do with your free time on semi retirement than hang out here with us, but here you are.

As you applaud Mr. Glesser for his consummate individualism, you should also respect and applaud the members here who also march to their own beat, and have contributed with posts for and against the Roadie, with respectful criticism, and without the trash talk that you allude to, and that is endemic in other sub-forums; so let's keep it real friend, this has been one of the more classier threads, and I don't say it because I'm the OP, but because the respondents made it so.

Hey, I'm all for it. I do not have a personal correspondence with Sal so I wasn't just saying that JUST for this thread but overall. The man has exercised great patience through the years. I would have snapped many times long ago.

"Spyderco's are ugly", "why the hole, I don't get it", "FRN sucks", "Lockbacks suck", "Blades are too wide", "Handles are too big" "blade-handle ratio is atrocius", "Over priced Taiwan junk", "why put a a finger choil, that's stupid.... Most knifemakers would have committed suicide hehe. Just in this thread, two posts after Sal the designer of the Roadie posted, a classy gent says it's "butt fugly"...A valid opinion but not very nice at all when the man who made it is present.

Yes. :)
But only cookies made with traditional recipes...no new-fangled M&M travesties. :D

I guess everyone gets a cookie after all!

I purposely omitted referencing that post since I suspect there's a lot more going on than his subjective and inflammatory post, if you know what I mean; wink, wink.;)

Thanx for the kind comments. I have thick skin. Al Mar told me my knives were "butt ugly", but he still helped me make them.

I'm looking forward to hearing your thoughts after using a Roadie.

Now I find out its available in red and blue handles! And only $48! I may gave to get one if these. Just don't tell GEC!

I say silly, like most spydercos
No need for that ricasso choil thing, just steals a bunch of blade length

Which would have increased blade length and not meet TSA guidelines, which is the raison d'être , as mentioned by one of our posters about ten thousand times.

Mr. Glesser, I really do like the knife. The more I look at it the more it grows on me as in so many of Spyderco's offerings. Once I was pretty sure that it would be a double détente opening thing instead of another hole I liked it even more. That's a nice little feature.

I already think of Spydercos as the "traditional of moderns" with full flat ground blades and non-overbuilt designs obviously meant for cutting. This one may not be one I buy, but I surely want to encourage further exploration into the world of "pocketknives".

S'neat knife. Don't guess there's any way to lose the non-functional hole?

Are there any pics around with something to give a size comparison?

That "ricasso choil thing" is one of its best features IMO. Not only does it improve handling, but on a non-locking knife it's an awesome safety feature. Spyderco designs are highly unconventional, but few would qualify as silly. They are designed for use, not looks. That some models appear strange is hardly sufficient reason to condemn the entire line. Nobody gets everything perfect.

Lose the "Spydie" hole near the pivot and I guess leave the double sided divet thingy and I guess it would be less horrible. BUT having both looks ridiculous.

I kind of just want to echo Stays Sharp here. I don't own any of your knives, as they just aren't my cup of tea. But the way you conduct yourself and represent your business on this forum is truly commendable and one of these days I will buy a manix2 to show my appreciation.
