So, I saw the announcement in the latest Spyderco Byte concerning the G10 mixup at the Golden factory. For those who don't know Spyderco unknowingly used a rougher G10 for a batch of PM2's, Manix and Natives. I'd post up an image of the announcement but I mistakenly deleted the email.

I know this might be a bit early but I'd like to hear more about it from those who might know more about it, or might have purchased said knives. I'm wondering if its as aggressive as some Cold Steel G10.

EDIT: I mistakenly listed Manix 2 and Natives, when it was the PM2 and Yo 2. Thanks Sharp guy for posting up the announcement!

Here's the article for those who haven't read it. I hope Sal & gang don't mind me posting it here. I was unable to post a link since it's in e-mail form.

Apparently, the deviation is limited to a few hundred each of the PM2 with satin blade (C81GP2) and DLC blade (C81GPBK2) along with several hundred Yojimbo 2's (C85GP2). It sounds to me like these are just now being shipped. Personally, I kind of like the idea of the G10 being a little more aggressive and would like to get my hands on one of the PM2's.

Para Military 2 Production Deviation

It’s no secret that the Para Military 2 is one of Spyderco’s most popular and in-demand products. Since its introduction in 2010, we have worked extremely hard to increase our production of it and, particularly since the opening of our new factory facility last year, have made great progress toward that end.

Although we are now producing more Para Military 2s than ever before, we recently ran into an unexpected problem. After machining a large batch of G-10 scales for the Para Military 2, we peeled off the protective top layer and discovered that the texture of the material we received was coarser than the G-10 we normally use. We had this same experience in our production of the scales for the Yojimbo 2. Unfortunately, by the time we realized this, we already had a significant inventory of machined scales for these models on hand.

After careful consideration of all the options, we decided the best course of action was to maintain our manufacturing stride and temporarily fulfill the ongoing demand for these models using the coarser G-10 material. This material is made to the same exacting quality standards as the G-10 we typically use, it just has a somewhat coarser texture pattern. To give you an idea of the difference, here’s a close-up photo of a standard G-10 scale next to the coarser one.

This temporary situation resulted in the production of a few hundred each of C81GP2 Para Military 2 with satin finished blade and the C81GPBK2 Para Military 2 with black blade with the coarser G-10 scale texture. It also produced several hundred C85GP2 Yojimbo 2s with the same scale material. These knives are being released into our distribution network in exactly the same way as the standard versions of these models and are currently shipping.

We have now reestablished our supply of G-10 with the standard texture and all current and future production will continue to use that material.

Just as we learned when we were kids, honesty is the best policy. And at Spyderco, that’s our only policy. Thank you for your understanding and patience during this temporary deviation.

Man those will be cool to have......at regular price.....the pm2s will be necessary for any hardcore pm2 collector!

Haha, kind of like toy Action Figures with the wrong card backing?

Actually, I can see some threads will pop up here asking for us to verify if the knife is a fake or not. You watch, it's gonna happen.

I need an excuse to buy a yojimbo, this should do!

Lets make this the thread for when/where these oddities surface!

Here's a Cold Steel Recon 1, Manix 2, and a Kershaw Avalanche. Comparing to the pic above, it doesn't appear that their g-10 will be quite as aggressive as these. Shouldn't be too rough on the pockets.

The Avalanche is one of my all time favorite knives, the g10 was pretty rough when new but gets smoother pretty quick. I would love a DLC PM2 with the mix up scale.

Exactly what went through my head after reading that!!

I agree. People may mistake these for fakes. I also agree that collectors will see these as more valuable. I don't collect so I don't care about that.

I wish Spyderco used more coarse g10. I have aPara2 that has gotten quite slick over the years as the G10 has pocket worn.

I'd for sure like to pick one up myself, but not knowing where they went is going to make finding them a crap shoot.

These are enticing! But yeah, it'll be tricky to figure out where and when they'll pop up.

I'm just using the "collectors item" angle to justify buying a Yojimbo, tbh.

Kinda gives it a faux-CF look that I dig.

i wouldn't mind trying the courser G10! if to just put in my collection! but like above has said, who no's where there going to show up at and when!

I'd love to see a pic of that worn down PM2. It'd be like looking into the future. [emoji6]

More traction is exactly what the G10 needs, IMO. After buying a PM2, I went back to frn. PM2 is like a greasy pig in my hand - summer time especially. Nope, nope, nope.

It is hard to catch in a pic. It hasn't worn through the peel ply or anything and I assume that would take decades but it is noticeably smoother compared to my unused one. It has just lost a little bite. It still works great but I would like to see G10 as coarse as my Southard has on a Para2. You can see in pics how the edges have been polished by my pocket but showing how the peel ply has smoothed a little is difficult. It seems as though all peel ply G10 smooths a little over time. I used to rotate knives less and I used to have less knives so at one point this was in my right rear pocket everyday for around two years.

That looks awesome. I've had my PM2 for over a year now and I can see the same sort of things developing with my G10.

I'd actually like to try out the course stuff too.
