Spydercos with great action

Hey guys, so one of my recent purchases was a Spyderco YoJimbo 2. Right away I was happily surprised by the action of the compression lock. It almost feels assisted or “magnetic” in the way the blade flies open as soon as you break the detent. I love it, especially compared to the YoJumbo, which for some reason has a rather lazy action. I’m still breaking it in tho.

I have trouble consistently being able to reverse flick any other Spyderco. But this YoJimbo 2 I bought has the best action of any Spyderco I have tried, hands down.

I own a few PM2s and the YoJimbo/Yojumbo, and that’s it as far as Spyderco. But I like everything about the brand, and was wondering what your favorite Spydercos are, and also, which ones have exceptionally good action like the Yo2?

All my PM2s have great action, I have a Yojumbo black that opens like a dream as well!

I’m definitely not saying the others are bad, just that the YoJimbo feels a little extra special. The size of the YoJumbo may have something to do with why it’s not as easy for me to operate

Has anyone modified a Stovepipe? If they made a version with the same blade shape as the YoJimbo/Yojumbo that would be tempting. Thick short blade…I bet that has really good action, I’m just not into the folding-cleaver thing

My Yojimbo 2 does have slightly better action than my PM2 did, I think part of it is the heavier blade.

My GB1 has really good action, and my Domino (with Taco bearings) is ZT level. My Southard is decent, but I'm still breaking in the new bearings.

My Manix 2 is pretty smooth to. Unfortunately my PM2 was stolen from my checked luggage.

My favorite actions were on a Delica 4 and Walker Lightweight.

The Delica 4 was well broken-in, and I had to make sure my index finger was in the right place when I pressed the back lock. The trick for breaking these in is to leave them tight and NOT oiled for several hundred open/close cycles. Let the surfaces wear each other smooth. THEN, loosen the pivot just a smidgen and add the tiniest drop of oil. Just like when a car engine is breaking in, you don't change the oil until you're supposed to.

The Walker just has such a light action, because they didn't get carried away with a super-thick liner lock that applied too much tension to the side of the blade.

Honorary mention, but I have two Benchmades with the Spydieholes that have an even better action, due to having the Axis Lock and still retain some of That Spyderco Feel, thanks to the Spydiehole. The knives are the special edition Griptilian with gray G10 scales, a 20 CV blade and blue liners and spacers and an older Mini Griptilian with FRN and a hollow-ground 154CM pointed sheepsfoot blade.

Oh .. Let’s see . Out of my experience Gayle Bradley 2, Kapara, Caribbean wh and pm3 lw.

Those are the best with notable mention to manix 2.

If I could get a Kapara in a steel other than S30V I would. $246 is too much for S30V, and I've had my share of issues with that steel that it is undesirable for me. Same for the Sliverax.

Thanks, I was hoping someone else would mention the Manix also, as I kind of like that design, and wouldn’t mind trying the cage lock 🤔

I'm hardly an expert, but in terms of smoothness of action, the Canis is hands down the best of all the Spydercos I own... :)

The Canis is a pretty cool looking knife!

The Chnnook 4 with the power lock has a really good action. It's a beauty.

Are you just finger flicking the Yojimbo?

If so, try depressing (thereby releasing) the compression lock tab while you flip the blade out and then immediately release the tab (thereby allowing it to engage to lock the blade in place when it hits the stop) and you'll find the "action" even quicker.

This opening technique also works well with my Para Military 1, 2 & 3 and may also work well w/other Spyderco compression lock knives, as well.

I’ve heard that before on this site.
I haven’t had any problems with S30v it has performed better than S45vn ime. I really like s30v personally, surprised to hear that you had a bad experience.

The manix 2 is a lot of fun, I really enjoy it.
