I just received a SpydeRench from James Mattis (thanks James) and it's very cool, a real gadget lovers joy toy.

Sal, or those in the know, can you tell me who designed this thing? As an engineer I enjoy good design, and this is great.

Wait until the guys at work see this!

Lucky Dog,
How does the Spyderench compare to other multitools. I'm considering getting one on sheer "diffrentness" alone, but I was wondering how it compared.
I have a Gerber Mulitool, and I love the fact that the pliers are really quick to get to. I'm also particularly intrested in how well the screwdriver bits work, compared to the leatherman with the screwdriver bit attachment. It seems to me that the spyderench has just about everying one would need all built into one multitool. I'm just apprehensive as to how well it performs (seems a little complex).

Thanks,
Mitch

Well just like a pair of pliers can't do things the same way a wrench can, the SpydeRench is a different animal then more traditional multi-tools. This isn't going to replace my Wave, but will supplement it. What got me going is the complex design and the interaction of the parts, it's very well thought out. I'm sure there will be some changes made down the road, but its evolution will be interesting. The Wave is probably faster in some things like accessing the screwdrivers. One thing I like is you can use the wrench and the screwdriver at the same time. I have to live with it some more to get a better impression.

I'd like to hear from other owners to see what they think.

I've been carrying the 'Rench for about three weeks now and I love it. I also carry a Wave. I, like LD, do not think the Rench will replace my Wave but rather supplement it. To me it's like the Wave is a multi-tool that happens to have an adequate knife blade, whereas the 'Rench is a great knife that also serves as a really good multi-tool. I also find that I often leave my Wave in the truck because I get tired of wearing it on my belt with my beeper and cell phone. The SpydeRench however rides comfortably clipped in my pocket. I've found that the long shaft of the 'Rench's screwdriver enables me to use it more like a real screwdriver ( when you have to reach a screw through a small opening that is set a little deep) and that the ability to use the screwdriver and adj. wrench separately does come in handy. The only gripe I have so far is the fact that the driver shaft is what holds the other driver bits in place so when you use the screwdriver you have to remove the extra bits or they will fall out. This is a very minor inconvenience. Overall so far I would have to say I am very pleased with mine and would reccomend it to anyone. As an added bonus the thing rates very high on the "cool gadget scale". Whenever I pull it out people inquire about it( even people who usually show no interest in knives) where I normally get no response when I use the Wave.
