I have had an opportunity to test the first Spyderench made from production parts. Have been using one for past two days. I must say that I am very proud of everyone involved in this project, especially Vince.
The tool is certainly unusual and won't be all things to all people, but Spyderco's introduction into the tool market certainly has a "style" about it.
The piece carries very easily. Don't know it's there. Easy to get by it while getting into the pocket. Accesses easily.
Though not a "quick draw", the knife is easily retrieved and opened with one hand. The 440C blade is very sharp. The piece that I have has a combination edge. I understand we're making plain, combination & fully serated. The lockback held in excess of 250 inch / pounds of force before defeat occurred.
The pliers provide very good to excellent gripping in both sizes. Though not a needle nose, the corner of the pliers are precise enough to securely grasp small things.
The adjustable wrench performed well on all sizes to 9/16. Gripping up close as well as using the extention for leverage.
The regular bits are held in using position with a ball bearing that worked well as did the concentric position of the extended handle in relation to the tip. The Phillips bits have little grooves cut into the sides and edges for grip in the screw slot.
I've used the file on steel, glass, brass and my fingernails. It is a coarse diamond file with one flat, one concave and one convex surface. A small Phillips bit on one end and a small straight bit on the other. The tool provides a handle for the file if needed.
I think those of you that choose to get one will enjoy both design quality and build quality.
