Spydie knives- which is your preferred model?

as a new forum member I've been somewhat struck by the popularity of the spyderco brand of knives. they don't seem to have the visual impact on me that other knives do.

I returned home from work last night to find a package containing the Spyderco Civilian I recently purchased. although it has limited application I was impressed by the overall quality which frankly I wasn't expecting.

Now I'm considering purchasing another model so I thought I would inquire here to see if there are particularly popular models.

someone may ask what I would use it for and I haven't really come up with an intelligent response. sometimes you just want one and can't quite come up with why.

which models should I consider for general use (EDC) and possible personal defense (which eliminates the smaller blades I imagine) ?

If you like the Civilian check out the SuperHawk.
It has the compression lock and carbon fiber scales.
I think it's design leans towards self-defense, yet it's not as radically designed for it as the Civilian so it's better for utility.
Parmilitary is another good compression locker that you can still buy, D-2 shown here with the D-2 Military that is harder to find. But other Millies aren't and they are really good larger SD blades.

The Military is a hell of a lot of knife in a light package that is easy to carry...

For a edc knife you would probably need something strong and easy to clean with a good lock, for SD you would probably need something with a good size handle. So I would suggest the para-military or the military. The Para is 2/3 the size of the military with just over a 3 inch blade.

I have about 6 models: My preference in order is:

1) Endura (G-10 handle).
2) Manix (still available from several sources)
3) Para-military (nice EDC)
4) Mini- manix
5) Delica (EDC's on my key chain)
6) Native (stays in my survival kit)

My personal favorites are the para and dodo. The phoenix looks like it'll be great once they work out some minor bugs though. I love the spyderfly and szabofly too.

For a big folder for EDC/SD, I like the Military, Kris, Endura (especially waved) and Chinook III. For something a bit smaller that will still be a very capable all-rounder, try a D4 (again, especially the waved versions) or a Caly III. If you want a very small blade that would make a good last ditch SD blade as well as a fantatic EDC, try the (now discontinued) Lava.

Enjoy the search!:D

You can't go wrong with a Military or a Para-Military.
They both ride a bit high in your pocket, which is a concern for some. Having said that though, there are people who can mod your knife with a low-rider clip. Also take into consideration that the handle on the Millie is quite big.

For a bit lighter duty, (boxes, letters, etc) look into a Caly3 or a Sage.

Here's the SuperHawks compared to the Paramilitaries, both compression locking and IMO one of Spyderco's best lock types.

Military followed by endura then the Manix. I have ALOT of Endura's and the only reason i like the mili better is the flat ground blade and I love S30V and BG-42 in that knife. They slice great....now if I can just get me a waved mili or para mili I'll be set;)

I'll reply with my list of Spydies owned and carried: is there a pattern showing?

5 x Military (PE S30V, PE S90V, PE BG42, SE 440V, SE ATS34)
2 x Paramilitary (PE S30V, PE D2)
1 x Endura 4 Wave (PE VG10)

I have 7 spydercos, and I played with a few other ones in the shop.
For me my Caly 3 is one of the ideal EDC knives. Very practical sturdy, yet light and compact. The VG10 version can be found on ebay for a reasonable price considering the high quality.

Military, Paramilitary, Delica, Endura are big favorites here. Best not to forget the Caly3... and Manix.
