Spydie's boring?

Lots of pics of '02 Spyderco's on the BF maker's forum. All quality pieces I'm sure, just like all Spydies, but nothing that impresses me. The Clipit brought about a revolution, forever changing the knife world, but now...

I know it's just me, but the hole makes all the knives too similar. No matter the blade shape or handle design/materials, there's always that big hole in the middle. And the new features seem a little 'gimmicky' to me. The phantom lock doesn't seem to be advantageous, just different. The Wegner Clipit, oops I mean Ocelot... The handle on the Lil Temperance, well personally I don't think I need that much help indexing a grip. Impala, ATR, Salsa, Jester; new, but all to familiar with that darned hole.

Don't get me wrong, quality is unquestionable. But Style falls behind BM or real pretty ones like William Henry. Of course they're still way ahead of old G10, chisel-ground, beadblast, linerlock EKI-Oh, but the wave is so cool. from...function...form...function...Screw it, it's just a matter of taste. I'll be getting a plainedge Merlin when available, not exactly a new design, but like I said, I can't tell the differnce anyway :D;)

Wow, I think Spyderco is the last company I would ever call boring. The only other company I see putting out as many models is CRKT and they are just about all collaberations.

Spyderco is constantly offering new innovations and they are constantly making knives that the people are asking for. In fact, I would say if you don't like their offerings then it's just as much the fault of the public as the company. Spyderco offers innovation while bending over backwards to please the public. The second they put something out, everyone and their brother tries to tell them how to do it better. Most other companies would say "too bad" and keep walkin' but Spyderco consistently listens.

If you don't like the hole then that's you choice but they're not going to stop using what they consider the best opening system because you want them to offer some aesthetic diversity.

Boring?
Chinook
Gunting
Ayoob
Temperance
Moran
Lum Chinese
Lum Tanto

These are just some recent models that come to mind that are far from boring and look nothing alike.

Style falling behind BM? Who cares? It took BM two years of people kicking and screaming to finally put out the axis AFCK. They don't show too much care in their customers' desires.

Not as pretty as William Henry? Spyderco doesn't charge what they charge nor can the products even be compared. Spyderco offers high performance knives that are meant to be used hard. William Henry offers gentlemen's knives which are used but not on the same level.

Don't look at a Jeep and complain that it's not a Boxter. You are looking at a company that makes user knives that is constantly innovating new forms of function and complaining that they aren't offering your desired level of aesthetics.

I also don't agree with the boring label. I think that some of Spyderco's knives are anything but boring. In particular the Lum Chinese, Gunting and Vesuvius do not fit under the heading of boring to me at all.

Everyone has there own likes and dislikes, but for me Spyderco is, for the price, as good as it gets.

Hell, I love them Spydies! Just got a new Centofante II a couple of days ago and can't seem to put it down. Got a Viele a couple of weeks ago, very sweet. The past year it's been Spyderco and CRKT for me; the most innovative companies offering the best values available, IMO. :D

I knew it was just my twisted sense of taste:p :D . Really, for me, I just keep trying to see bits of Delica/Endura/Catcherman/etc. in the new knives for some reason:confused: Some obviously have nothing but the hole in common with the older designs. I guess it's the mtal handles on some of the knives, too. If I see a smooth metallic handle, that's where I stop, no way I can trust a handle like that in some of the conditions I use a knife. And the MBC stuff hasn't grown on me yet. Not that Spydies aren't varied, but anything beyond the basic FRN lockback doesn't seem to catch my eye as well as other makes do. I'm just a little crazy, I guess (at least that's what my therapist keeps telling me:eek: )

And have you noticed how all of their knives have sharp edges? Yup, asleep at the wheel in Golden, they are. I've heard that all of their knives this year will also have blades made of metal. I mean, how boring can you get. Sure, other than the metal blades with edges, they only share the hole as a common feature (except, of course, for the fixed blades - which still sport boring metal blades), but, come on Sal, can't you come up with something different for a change?

I bought a Chinook from Vinny's Knives, recently, and I challenge anyone to pick up one of these James Keating-designed beauties and tell me it's boring.

Exactly my point, Brian :D Ahh, but I did go to knifecenter's Spydie page and looked for all black-handled, saber ground, opening hole havin' knives. Anyone remember the Jess Horn model?

To each his own. What you find boring, is exciting for me. Can't wait to get my hands on some of the 2002 models. Temperance Jr, Salsa, and the World knife for sure. Of course, I love the Spydie hole, so that alone is probably our main difference here. The Phantom lock imho, is awesome. I wish Sal would put out some Orange Rescue Jrs, marked 9/11. I'd want one of those as well. Jeff

I would also say Spyderco are anything if NOT boreing! I will second Benchmade for that honour. Oh and Cold Steel... Not another 8a knife?

Not just you - I HATE the "spyderco look". Good knives, yes, but ugly as sin

hardheart mate, could not sit by and watch you get overrun by bug supporters - especially since I agree with you.
They all look the same to me and ugly to boot.
There is not a single one that I would want to own.
So there.

Oupa, I will fight to the death to defend your right to be wrong.:p

We all have different likes and dislikes and there is going to be people that don't like Spyderco for one reason or another. I don't think it will cause Spyderco's owners and management to many sleepless nights. You can't please everyone, but Spyderco obviously pleases enough people to be a very successful company.

Yep, boring and they all look the same and yet, I can hardly wait for the new ones to come out.
But, lo and behold, as boring and look alike as they SEEM to be to some, I have more Spyderco products than any other brand in my uhhh, collection...yeah, collection. That's it.

Just think fellas, Spyderco is coming out with a couple of new fixed blades, and they haven't put holes in them yet.:p

:) I too, think that all Spydies look alike. Gunting doesn't count, which looks waaaay to strange. I don't question their functionality, as I have never had Spydie. One way or another all Spydercos have that unique Spyderco look, some like it, I don't.

As of CRKT, I like some of their designs, but their addiction to AUS8... I may be wrong but I couldn't find anything else in their catalog.

P.S. IMHO BM+Chris Caracci were the only guys who made really good looking blade on Spyderco motives ;) I mean AFCK.

806D2 on order from 1SKS, 'scuse me whilst I wipe away the droooool.

As for my question of the old Jess Horn, IIRC, it had jigged bone, SS bolsters, and instead of a hole, it had an indentation ground in the blade. Kinda like a super-size nail nick. Saw it in an ad on the back of a mag many moons ago-my first thought-"Where's the hole?"

Wow, found it- http://knifecenter.com/knifecenter/spyderc/horn.html

I am glad spydie has maintained a function first attitude then aesthetics secondary as all practical items should be.

BM's knives are good on paper but when the product comes it just doesn't hold up to spydie!
