Spydie's boring?

Not at all! I am often entertained by my Spyderco knives. I just can't bring myself to carry anything else.

I wouldn't think to judge anyone's taste, phillistine though they may be, but to say that all Spyders look alike because they share the hole? Really?

The Lum Chinese looks like the Lum tanto how? And how are they indistinguishable from the Wegner? I would venture to say that most any of us could discern the Chinook from, say, the Gunting. There are Spyders with the "hump", and Spyders without. Spyders with steel, G-10, Ti, carbon fiber, and plastic handles. They come in a variety of colors, and some have shell inlays. There are any number of different blade shapes, steels, and edge configurations. There are little blades, big blades, and everything in between. Spyders for work, dress, or combat, and all specifically conceived and executed for their purpose.

If you don't like anything in the Spyder line, that's no big deal. Taste is personal, and everyone is entitled to theirs. But your premise is like saying that all Mercedes look alike because they share the same emblem on the hood. If you can't see the differences, well, it takes all types I guess.

Its like anything in life, I will use music as another example. I asked a friend to listen to Metallica and Tool. He thought all the songs sounded near enough the same! I listen to his... rave music and it DOES sound the same. Different strokes for different folks. If it does not appeal, you don't look or listen closly and miss the detail. All that is perceved is the main philosophy or statement. With Spyderco it is the hole, IMHO the best opening device ever invented. The Wave is cool, but looks hard on the trousers! Spyderco knives are utility blades first and artworks second. The Spyderco range could do with some wood inlay and a greater artistic flair IMHO, but that is where BM are going right now. It does not add one jot of function to a knife either and if you want a solid, well made, inovitive and reliable knife at a fair price, well for my money its Spyderco or nothing.:)

As much as I love my Sebies, a Spyderco is a knife you can use for anything! At the great prices they charge, who cares if you break one? Well... hey they are still great value! Even if I don't break mine!;)

Spyderco knives are not even close to being boring. Boring is Cold Steel, boring is Case Cutlery. Benchmade despite manufacturing good knives will soon become boring unless they come up with new designs.
Spyderco has always been in the lead as far as producing cool knives with top designers and various blade steels.

Just kidding. Seriously though, "boring" can apply to a lot of different things. Spyderco is not boring when it comes to innovation. They are always coming up with new ideas. Perhaps they are boring in their marketing. It's not like they have a great add campaign going (nor do many manufacturers since 9-11). Are they boring in their design? Ah-ha! That it what becomes truly debatable since now we are talking about aesthetics as well as function. I know knife nuts that think if it doesn't look like it come out of Hibbend's Star Trekey collection, then it's not worth looking at. I personally get bored looking at a knife that I can't take apart. So is Spyderco boring? Maybe, maybe not. Just depends on your point of view.

P.S.: I think they're boring as hell. Just kidding. Actually I'm not. Wait! Yes I am. (Not).....

Spyderco is far from boring, you should spend 10 minutes with Sal Glesser and let him tell you all the exciting knives that are in the works. I just did at the NYCKS. I'll admit there aren't many knives from any company that are as great as the Spyderco/Horn C27, including William Henry. Most Spydies are pure function, everyone a little different for different needs. Maybe they don't all ring your bell, but if you need a knife and you can't find a Spydie to fill your needs you just ain't looking hard enough. Or you just need to wait a little longer. ;)

In my opinion there's something to be said for the spyderhole as a recognivable trademark. I really like it when all the knives have one thing in common.
I also find the look of nearly all their knives very appealing for some reason. I guess its just personal taste.
