Hello Gentlemen,

I have recently acquired a square wheel variable speed grinder with "digital control". It has reverse, digital read out, programing and other features. My question is why and how would a knife maker use these features?

I have been using a JL variable speed grinder with analog(on/off and dial control) and can not figure why a maker would pay the additional $ (2500 vs 1800).

Any ideas comments would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

My guess would be, maybe a someone who likes to grind while standing on one side of the grinder, say no room on one side and you can't flip the knife, so you reverse the belt. Different belts different steels grind different, makes it easier to maintain quality and design using the same speed. Programming seems over the top but maybe someone has use for variable speed.

Is the controller a VFD? I have seen a lot of those that let you program a motor to the specs you want. A lot of people are going to VFD's versus DC motors these days.

thanks for the replies! The square wheel has ample room on both sides. I would think it would be dangerous to grind with belt runnig in reverse. It would tend to throw the blade up toward your face.

The VFD is an interesting take and I'll check that out. The machine is offered through Janz Supply who services the knife making community. So I would guess it was for knife makers and not some other industry.

It was an offer I just couldn't refuse even though I don't need another grinder right now.

Thanks again for the thoughts and any more would be appreciated.
