I love the name, square wheel grinder!! Sounds very mysterious!!! Anyways, put on your imagination cap. I know this is very simplistic, but I don't know of any other way to explain it! Imagine placing four cans on a table so they make a square (with space separating all of them). Now if you strung a belt around the cans, you have what a square wheel grinder looks like without a cover on it. Of course, the apparatus is covered, leaving only one sanding surface (one line of the square)exposed. I hope you see now! It is just a belt strung on four wheels that form a square. You aren't sanding on the wheel (you don't grind on an 10" wheel like hollow grinding) but you are sanding on the straight section of belt between two (smaller ) wheels!!! Whew!! Try searching the net for a picture. That may be more effective than listening to me!!!

Hey Crayola...

Ahhh Ok I'm starting to understand...

So the surface you grind on is flat..
Cool!
Thanks!!!

OK, does anyone use a 10" wheel on a Wilton?

C.L., just got a ten inch smoothy for my Wilton. I free handed a small drop point with it and everything went great. It hollow grinds a small blade so shallow, it almost looks like a flat grind.

I use an 8" and 10" on the Square Wheel, both in 1" and 2" wide. Square Wheel is hard to beat for being versatile.

why are they so noisy? i hear that from alot of makers. do you guys like the closed type of grinder aposed to the open belt grinder like i'm making.

I owned one back in the early '70's. Yeah buddy, are they noisy. The only reason I sold mine was, it only had a 1 hp motor. Back then I made a *lot* of large knives. As far as the side frame, it was always left open.

oh, i guess if you use hearing protection it won't matter, i'm putting a 1 1/2hp motor on mine, but it's gonna be completely open becuase not as much dust blows back in your face, plus you don't need to clean it.

I keep mine closed up and have a dust collection hose underneath the wheels and platens. I would rather the hose suck the dust than my lungs! (course I wear a respiratior) Why the noise? Just the way it is built I guess, dont really know.
