Squeeze more performance out of my laptop?

Honestly just check slickdeals and watch for a deal on a budget gaming rig. I got a dell desktop for $289. core i3-2100, 4gb ddr3, 1tb 7200rpm drive, wireless n, and optical drive. I put in a corsair 550w psu i got for $35 after rebate, 8gb patriot ddr3 i got for $15 after rebate and a radeon 6770 i got for $70 after rebate. So basically a little over $400 for a decent budget gaming rig. Laptops are just not worth the hassle of upgrading. Save the $100 you'd blow on a card and just put it towards a new desktop.

That's what I'm going to do. I haven't decided if I'm going to do a budget system or spend about double that, since it appears, in this case, that double the investment really does seem to be double the performance (at least in terms of framerates and gaming quality).

I'm going to leave the laptop alone, apart from doing a fresh install of Windows when I can back everything up.

not sure if someone has already mentioned, but something I've been running into with my lappy is cooling. if you can take the bottom off of it and give the fins and fans a good clean, that might help. as your temps go up, most comps will start to slow down to save themselves. As far as video players go, you may want to check that you have all of the codecs you need. you can find more help for that on the VLC site, with so many codecs being used, sometimes you just don't get the right one.
