squirrels and traditional pocket knives

I have been wanting to go squirrel hunting for quite some time but there are not very many around our place in Yale, Oklahoma. I knew there were plenty around my parent's home about two hours west of here so I took my 6 month old son home a week ago for some hunting.

I dropped my son off with his grandma and both were happy with the arrangement. As I was getting ready to leave, my dad said he had something for me. He came back from his truck with a Hammer brand slipjoint that had a clip blade as the master, a medium sized spey blade and an awl or punch to make up the selection. It had sort of white acrylic scales and had belonged to my Grandpa. Grandpa has been gone for more than twenty years and this knife had laid on his workbench since then. Dad had it cleaned up a bit and I used the DMT credit card stone from my wallet to work the edge just a bit. Then I set out on my grand adventure.

I only walked about two hundred yards north of the houses and rested my Remington 20 gauge pump on the ground to wait. It was not long before I saw a good sized red squirrel climbing all around a cottonwood tree. One shot later he was on the ground and my hunt was over. Total time from out the door to done was under fifteen minutes. That clip blade did well on the skinning and I put the meat in salt water for two days before cooking it.

I had seen that knife before but now it will be even more special to me.
