Hello
Does anybody know if Stripped SR-101 Is about as Rust Resistant as Kabars 1095 ? OR is SR-101 More likely to rust ?
Thanks for any Info.

I found if you take the decarb off the SR101 it is about equal to kabar 1095.

If there is any decarb left on... rust magnet in the presence of any moisture.

Thanks, if its at least as resistant as 1095, ill be fine. Especially with mustard forced patina. I stripped a BK2 few years back, its still well and kicking.

Some times patina turned out better than others, I sand blasted it few different times and did it over again

This wasnt finished yet, usually after, id patina the whole blade, and it would blend the strippes a bit and look much better (P.S. this time i left mustard on too long)

That stripe patina looks fantastic D! I'd love to see some step by step pics if you have any handy where you patina the stripes, patina the whole blade, then do the blending.

Another great way to get a striped patina is to stick the blade directly in an onion.

Hey Ben,
Thats pretty much the whole step by step there lol
Usually after ill get a paper towel soaked in vinegar, and wrap the blade for few min.
I think im gona cine up with some cool design for my TG-p

In my experience 1095 and 52100 (sr101) are similar, but I'd give a slight nod to the 52100 in corrosion resistance.

.

It makes an instant patina when used in the kitchen, i guess it won't rust now

The darker you want the stripes, the longer you leave it on. it looked way better other times i did it, this time i think edges of stripes got too dark, i think id leave it for 10-15 min.
P.S.
Yiu can also You Tube it to make sure

Carbon steel blades have been used for .... how long now? 200 years? 500 years? more?

There have been sooooo many threads here about corrosion on SR101.

Your great-grandfather didn't worry about. The knife is a tool. Just take care of it like he did.

I didnt mean for this to become the whole long thread.
It was just a quick question. I had no problem caring for 1095 and was curious if SR-101 is kind of like that.

If you rest, you rust.
Just don't give it a rest and it'll be fine. :D

If you do let it rest... Beat the rust off of it!!! :p

SR101 will rust like mofo if you stripped it without any surface finishing because the machine finished left under coating is rough as hell.

I like that, cant let it rest/rust lol
Is DC or Sand blasted finish more likely to rust that Ghetto Satin ?
I noticed when i sand Blasted 1095 it would absorb WD40 like spung.

I can't say how rust resistant it is but one of my favorite things about it is that it's like an etcha-sketch for grown ups. Put a patina on it and then when you want to change up the look, a couple minutes with a scotch brite pad and you can start from square one all over again.

That DT looks pretty cool, cant wait to try some kind of design with the TG-p
