hey guys,

I'm considering picking up a Howling Rat LM as a FB EDC.

What do you fellas think? Is this a good option for an EDC?

Another option is the Yardkeeper LE. But the HR comes with a nice leather sheath, which makes my life easier.

Thoughts?

Well, I spend most of my day behind a desk, more's the pity, but I can dress pretty casually at work, so I can conceal a fairly large FB.

I have found, though, that the smaller FBs are a lot more comfortable to tote around all day, especially when sitting in the cars with their bucket seats and all./

The HRLM is a tad big for me to comfortably EDC concealed... I did a Rat Hunter for a while and it worked okay, but that was a little big too.

But you could try it, it may be just right for you.

One good reason is that a fixed blade is superior in every way to a folder. . . ;)

Folders compromise on everything for a little easier mode of carry.

Besides the obvious. ;)

But it seems like a little 'much', when all you need is a pocket knife. JMO :)

I EDC a folder when I have to "tuck in"... (just for concealment sake)

If I can leave a shirt untucked, I will always prefer a fixed blade EDC, even though it is admittedly a little less comfortable. I just feel better about having a fixed blade on me, even though 99.9% of the time a decent folder would suffice.

I've got nothing against folders, just like the fixed ones

I think the HRLM is one "bad mother fucker" (pulp fiction, anyone?), but I'd recommend something more compact like a swamp warden for EDC. Kinda scary for non knife-nuts when you bust out an HRLM in the office to open a package. But if it's cool with your workplace and you don't think you'd get in any trouble for carrying it, do it!

:thumbup::thumbup::thumbup:

Go for it.

The HRLM is just like the other guy said a "bad mo fo"

If you feel comfortable with larger blades and just want something a little less cumbersome I think the HRLM is the way to go. Personally I feel that it is about the ideal size for belt carry, but I carry my GW and others of similar size in pockets sheaths. If I thought I could stuff my LM in my pocket I would try.

As far as spooking the sheeple goes, I think that the LM is small enough to "disguise" in your hand so that only the most fragile will be scared, and there ain't no way around scaring them, they would be frightened by the sight of nail clippers.

hey, variety is the spice, y'know?

I have plenty of folders and most days tote an Emerson, which scare sheeple plenty bad as well. Fortunately people at work are used to my 'eccentricities' :D

I'm just keen to explore the possibilities of a FB EDC. I have a couple that I tote already, but decided my next FB purchase would be a Rat or a Scrapyard.

Finally, does anyone know what the HRLM sold for originally? I just want to check I'm not being totally fleeced :D

$148+/- From the Rat Store. Great deal on the exchange for HRLM & sheath (blatant plug)

Thread hijack in progress...:p

People in general scare too easily these days (well sometimes). Put them in the grocery store and if they see a Howling Rat LM on your belt, they'll probably wonder if they are going to have to turn their wallet or purse over to you. Or maybe they'll think, "Geez! Why does a guy like that need a knife that big? Is that Rambo??? WTF???"

On the other hand, put them behind the wheel and many will have no reservations about driving suicidally/homicidally while text messaging their buddies. Go figure.

Okay, back on topic...:D

I dont think the HRLM would be that comfortable to carry EDC. My Fallkniven S1 conceals better. Maybe it has to do with the slimmer blade. The YK would probably be a little easier. I really like the HRLM though.

Hey,

Thanks for the cool pic!

I really like the Yardkeeper, actually, but the HRLM I'm looking at already has a sheath, which makes my life a lot easier.

They look around the same size to me - why do you say the HR is harder to conceal?

I'm also curious as to whether the Yard Keeper is a good slicer. I believe the blade is thick!

The handle is noticeably bigger on the HRLM when you handle them. I like the feel of the YK material on the handle but the HRLM fits my hand perfect. If i were you i would probably get the HRLM. It is harder to come by than the YK in my experience. Ive seen 4 Yks for sale on the auction site in the past 2 weeks. I like them both. I havent done any fine slicing with my YK but it is sharp.

hey bro,

I decided to go with the Yard Keeper....

Several factors came into the mix, but ultimately I'm a sucker for shiny steel. Actually, I was torn between that and a DM LE, but the smaller size will be more convenient for EDC.

It worked out real well, as it turns out the seller had a sheath lying around and he's letting me have it for a song. So that helps tremendously.

I'm pretty stoked - it's my first score off the Exchange and I've been lurking for a couple of months now! :D

When you're overseas, things are a lot more complicated!
