SR1 Tanto woes

Some time ago, I bought a SR1 folding knife from an eBay seller who appeared to be offering it up for a good price. This was before I had any real education on how to investigate one before purchasing it. The seller was not a knife person so my usual questions on its condition were not answered as they should have been (Clue 1). The "where did he get it from" question was not answered properly (Clue 2). It arrived in what looked like a real CS box (Clip Point) but I received a Tanto (Clue 3). I did get some money back after I brought that to his attention. The feel seemed right for the knife dimensions but the quality wasn't there. When I purchased the true Clip Point from another vendor (not eBay), it was obvious that the 1st one was not of CS quality.

Anyone else find that in the SR1 Tanto?

Odd as it seemed, I could not find any reference to videos on the SR1 Tanto that showed how to spot a fake in that particular model.

both real ones should be the same other than blade shape. id say your gut is right the first one ya bought is probably a fake.

using authorized dealers is the best way to curb receiving a fake. ebay, amazon, walmart 3rd party, etsy etc and the like is gonna get ya good potential for fakes, even if paying full price.

I assume that authorized dealers always get their stock directly from the manufacturers or possibly a broker/middleman between them and the manufacturers. It would be great if any other BF members, who work for one of the major manufacturers, could chime in here. I was breezing thru the etsy pages one day looking for fakes and it didn't take long to find them. I tried to get into a conversation with one etsy seller on a particular ssoogg knife and they avoided answering my questions. That was enough for me.

The only knife-related things I will buy on eBay are either too old and/or unusual for someone to make fakes. I still have to contend with potentially fraudulent photos and descriptions, but it reduces the probability of getting an actual fake. Given that, I rarely patronize eBay vendors except when I need a Leatherman Rebar for a kit or a gift. Fake Rebars are unlikely since it's old and not cool, like the Wave. I've acquired four through eBay over the years and three were essentially unused and the fourth was nearly so, with some minor surface rust that wiped off easily.

I feel like it's a good enough ( not great, but good enough) deal to pick an online dealer that has a rewards program and just stick with them. The one I use doesn't always have the best price but by sticking with them I get a gift card back for the often times ridiculous perfectly fine and acceptable amount of money I spend.

You have to be careful these days online. I do have a real tanto sr1 in the safe. I've had for a few years, never used though. I need to move it along I guess. I have a need for a clip point these days.
