The engines were an unbelievable engineering feat for the time and even by today's standards are unmatched by anything currently flying (that we know of ).

Glad you added the part in brackets. Hate to have to send the tic tac out to bag you.

I do think this needs to split into WW II, Cold War, and modern aircraft

Very cool, I just looked it up and top speed for the SR71 is equivalent to just over 3200 fps which is above the muzzle velocity of most large calibers (and bullets shed speed pretty quickly in any case).
