SRK or S1?

Merry Christmas you guys !

I am trying to decide between the Cold Steel SRK , or the Fallkniven S1 as a good , general bush knife. The SRK is now AUS 8 , so both are reasonably stainless. They also come with kydex sheaths ( which I like. )

Very similar blades : therefore a tough decision for me. It doesn't matter to me if the blades are black-coated or not. ( The Fallkniven comes in black, but is priced substantially higher from my supplier.)

How do you fellas feel about these knives , and what would be your selection ?

Thanks,

Pete

I don't own either. Have handled an F1 in the past and a few cold steel blades. Get the S1. Laminated steel is far superior (VG10 core with 420 SS on the outside) as well as the full convex grind. SRK is as thick as a brick. The S1 is also too thick IMO, but not as blocky as the SRK. The S1's edge geometry will actually let you cut stuff.

I absolutely agree with kgd. The S1 is a much more usable option right out of the box and it has better sheath options.

S1 hands down out of those two. Better materials by a loooong shot. Far better edge geometry as well. Most likely the Fallkniven sheath is better as well.

I would search the web for an older SRK - made from Carbon V.
I have a Master Hunter in that steel - it rocks ! Even at a small edge angle it doesn't chip or roll

Thanks for the input fellas. I think I will go with the S1 for a couple of reasons. The convex edge as opposed to a HG one , and the exposed tang on the end , which I think will be good for scraping a firesteel or other object.

I am not familiar with the VG-1 steel , or laminate steels , but from what I've read , seems like an outstanding performer.

the older carbon five SRK I wouldn't trade it for a S1, However I would trade if it were the newer aus8 model. I sold my Falknivens when I got into the Bark Rivers.

hey Jim - I'm with you. Love my old SRK as my "one knife". Just curious, if you wouldnt mind - which Bark River do you feel does a good replacement for the SRK? Thanks

Get the S1! I have several Fallkniven knives and they are addictive once you use them;).

Both are great knives. I would have no reservations about an SRK in carbon steel over an S1. Particularly if dollars are a major concern. But if you want a stainless knife the S1 is top notch.

I own a Carbon V SRK and it makes a great knife that went into a B.O.B. I paid $40 for it and havent used it much. It is really thick and will do what you need it too.
I also own a A1 which I think is a good comparision to the S1 as its the same thickness and edge geometry. The A1 is one of my favorite knives. It shaves wood, is easily sharpened and is supposedly extremely tough.

The S1 is a realy Great knife, It is pretty much my go to for woods chores. I have no problem with the SRK in fact its one my favorite cold steel knives, but I would prefer the S1.

Have both the S1 is the better knife. My SRK is made out of carbon V too. The Fallkniven is the finer instrument.

The laminated VG-1 steel is a great steel.
I've had an F1 and an A1 both in laminated VG-10.
Gave the F1 to my daughter for her knife as she's a Pathfinder Leader for
kids outdoor survival and she needed a good knife.
The other went to a very good friend in a trade for a hunting bow.

Can't go wrong with Falkniven knives in my opinion

i picked up acouple of the srk's when they were still made from carbon 5, have given them to a few departing soldiers on their way to the sand box, gifts as a way to support the troups.

they have held up well.
