SS foil welding

Really lucky?

22 Blades today.

No discoloration, or welding, or anything odd.

I am always striving to improve my procedures, if there are better results to be had, I want to have them...

I plate quenched in the foil. I did apply light pressure to the plates with a clamp, but I am wondering if any pressure at all is part of the problem. I will check the thermocouple, but I'd be surprised if it is off that much.

FYI, I ground off the welded foil, not that big of a deal, but still a nuisance.
 
One more thing: go easy on the WD 40 if you use it. It seems to help in less formation of crud, but too much WD 40 can get exciting if it vaporizes and causes a mini-explosion. I have tried talcum powder (actually foot powder now that I think of it) in the foil packet and it was a real mess. So, lots of debate between single vs double foil wrap; WD 40 vs talc vs tobacco vs paper vs wood chips; and check my oven temperature.
 
Pressure has never been a problem for me.

If you're getting good results with a single wrap then stick with it. If you really want to know if you can improve your process, why not just try a blade double wrapped and see if it works better for you? You'll be out all of a dollar.
 
I suppose I could, though I don't see how I could get anything better.

I guess what I was after was that if I get these results with a single wrap, why doesn't everyone?

They should...

I'm guessing there is something amiss in the methodology if multiple wraps are required. Holes, bad seams, etc...

If I was getting parts that looked like the OP's or anything similar, I would investigate to see where I was going wrong, just like Phil did by starting this thread.
 
I don't think anyone is getting parts like his :D

Mine come out with a fine oxide, a quick blast or a few swipes will take it off. Double wrapping reduces it. I don't double wrap my knives, but I have and I have seen a difference.
 
I plate quenched in the foil. At least this thread got some discussion going on:
-HT temperature and soak time for 154CM
-WD 40 or no WD 40 before sealing in foil
-Single wrap vs double wrap
-Tobacco, paper, etc. inside the packet to burn up O2.
-Checking temperature of the thermocouple

At any rate I ground off the welded foil, no harm done. Just a PITA. Next time I'll try lower temp, shorter soak, and no pressure at all on the plates.
