St Croix Rods

I've used tons of St. Croix products, both their fly-fishing rods and their spinning/baitcast stuff, and own some as well. They make GREAT rods, HERE IN THE USA (edit: looks like they've recently started making some of their lower-end rods in Mexico... :(), and have been doing it for quite awhile so they know what they're doing, period.

While I prefer Sage and Loomis for fly rods, St. Croix are my go-to spin fishing rods. The Premier series is pretty hard to beat for around $100. My primary Walleye rod is an Avid, and while it is an AWESOME rod, I don't think it is necessarily worth ~2x what the Legend rods go for (edit: IMO, a good chunk of that addt'l cost is the lifetime warranty...). I had some gift certs when I bought it, so I splurged a little, and they didn't make the weight/length that I wanted in the Premier lineup.

Anyway, I don't think you'll go wrong with a St. Croix!

I bought the Premier series rod and it is really a great rod. I have never had an upper level rod ( a rod costing over $100) before, used for fresh water. I have several Tuna set-up's that can break the bank. The St. Croix is make all of my other rods look cheap and worthless. I won't buy another cheap rod. The action and feel/response is amazing. Thanks for the comments and now I know what the fuss is all over.

I bought an ultra lite from the Panfish collection a couple weeks ago and after using it a few times, I just had to have another one. Yesterday I purchased an Eyecon and took it fishing. Great rods! You'll not want to use anything else after fishing with them.

Many of the higher end Gander Mountain poles (GSX-ti and better) are all made for Gander by St. Croix, just have Gander Mt. branding on them and are alot cheaper then the regular st. croix rods.

I thought that used to be the case, but no longer. Not for a while actually.

Mckrob,

I have that exact same set-up in your picture and love it for lightweight spinning when packing light. I also have some of their one and two piece spinning rods and they are some of the best. I used to work in a sporting goods store and have tried, used and own many brands including G. Loomis and I feel that St. Croix is the cream of the crop for sensitive feel and balance and they are a bit cheaper than G. Loomis. You can't go wrong with that set-up.

I just ordered in the PS70MF3, a 7', 3 piece travel rod from Cabelas, should be here in a week or so. Now to find a reel to do it justice... Im thinking of another Plfueger President, I'm pretty happy with the one I already have.

I have handled them before and they are amazing. If the money was there I would bite and get one in a heart beat but while my Shimano V-rods are still going strong (bought 4 of them when they were being discontinued) I cant justify any more high end rods.

st croix makes outstanding fly rods and IIRC they also carry a lifetime warranty. One of my saltwater fishing buddies swears by st croix for his surf gear.

St Croix is a excellent rod as has been mentioned above. I love mine and also love my G.Loomis Ultra lite med. action rods for Walleye. Both are worth the money IMO and a joy to use.

OK, you guys talked me into it. Wanting to try baitcasting, I stopped at Bass Pro and selected a St. Croix Premier. Seven foot, one-piece, medium-heavy.

We'll see how it goes...

I used to fish a lot of st. croix rods, but over the last few yrs it seems like the rod market has became very competitive.

If I was looking for a nice high dollar rod I would look at Dobyns. But nontheless thats a pretty good deal if true!

Nice.

My dad had a couple. The set up I liked best was a 6'6" two piece spinmaster paired with a penn 4300. Good stuff. Im looking at picking up my own here shortly.

I have a great deal of trouble finding a light action spinning rod that I actually like. So I end up trying rods out because there is no substitute for actually using one. You can get a feel in the store, but that is about it. My favorite spinning rods are light action with a stiff butt and fast tip and I prefer cork or other material covering the entire handle (the common ultra light design) versus a slot for the reel. I tend to mount my reels a little further back toward the butt end than many.

You get something for the price over $100 and once in a while you can get something that really feels good for under $100. St Croix makes some good rods for the price. I am going to be so so sad when the day comes that I break my G Loomis light action rod that has been discontinued for a few years now. It was pricey, but I have never used a rod with such good feel as this one. Unfortunately, I always end up breaking my rods stumbling along a slippery mountain stream eventually. The breaks that really bother me is when you pick up your rod to use and .... the tip is broke off and I know I stored them pretty carefully. Probably a micro fracture that caused the rod to finally give up the ghost.

Time to hit the streams in search of trout! Fall is a wonderful time for getting out, exploring, and doing some fishing and photography.

Maybe it is time for a DIY fishing rod 22-rimfire.
Pretty sure Loomis sells blanks.
All the supplies are easy to come by...
I've wrapped one rod, converted a terribly beat up spinning rod to casting.
Not bad if you take your time and go slow.
