do all epoxy saturated stabalized woods buff out with that plastic look or does it vary? Most of what I see sold in scales by the knife making suppliers seems to be the epoxy stabalized variety. Is there a place that sells the other form of stabalized wood (not shure of the proper term) in scales or small sections? Bieng in Alaska its dry as a bone and I have to make and send a knife to ultra humid Washington state. I figure anything unstabalized will swell regardless of finishing. Do you guys think I am right on that point? Thanks for any help.

I think most scales will swell going from bone dry to humid Western WA or for that matter water logged Southeast Alaska :) where I commercial fished for years. I think some natural woods might not be very affected. Ironwood and cocobolo come to mind.

BigJim,
I have tried many varities of stabilized wood. Keep an eye out for wood stabilized by WSSI. These guys really have it together. There treatment process will handle submersion in water without changing. The wood type only matters in relation to the natural oil content, woods with a high oil content doestn't respond to any stabilization process well. Examples are rosewoods. Most American woods respond well Maple,Ash,birch and so on.
Hope this helps. Lokk up WSSI and give Mike a call if you have further questions.

You don't have to buff. This is one of mine with maple burl stabilzed by WSSI.

Epoxy ? I thought it was all acrylic .You can buff it and get a high gloss but you can get a matt finish too if you want.

Jim,
This is off the subject, but I'm going to be in Fairbanks from May 28 to June 1. Do you have time on a week night for a visit to your shop? I'm thinking either Wednesday or Thursday will be the days that I have the most time? We could have a beer or three and talk knives.

One other thing, with all the mammoth ivory up there at discount prices, I'm jealous. I usually come home with about 5 pounds of the stuff on every visit.

If you can fit me in, email me your contact information to scott.ickes@timken.com please.
