Stabilized Burl Evaluation for Folder Makers

I like number 2 myself. It was some maple burl that just started to spalt giving a little bit of contrasting orange color. It really stabilized really good. Extra hard and heavy.

I have 2 folders I would love to put some of your wood on... They are not custom folders but I would be more than willing to provide any critique/comments.

If this fits what you're looking for the dimensions are {1/8" x 1 1/2" x 5 1/4"} and {1/8" x 1 1/2" x 5"}.

If you're looking for custom folders only then throw my name out! It will be a while before I will have the skills/time necessary for a custom folder.

Regardless, thanks for putting this out there, I hope you get the response you're looking for and need!

I can't promise a completion date, but I would like to give it a try.

5/32" x 1 1/4" x 4" would be nice ;)

Thanks for the offer.

Cut Off Date for this will be Friday October 2nd
If you want to try some of the stabilized wood on your folders post the dimensions you need before then.
Thanks, Mark

I have a bunch of stabilized folder scales ready to go now. Those of you who will be trying out the scales have a choice on how they will be mailed. $2.50 for 1st class or $5 for priority mail. My address for paypal is itsaburl@hotmail.com.
There is still room for a few last minute additions to those who wish to try the stabilized scales.
Thanks, Mark

I need an email address or mailing address.

I am mailing the scales out today. The sets were picked at random with 2 sets per person. Each set is cut oversized so you can position them for the look you like best. Some may have some small flaws that can be trimmed away when you decide how to position the grain and figure on your handle. They were cut and drum sanded to just over 1/8" thick. I didn't do much sanding so they won't look anything like what they will when you finish them. I think it is some pretty good stuff. We'll wait and see what you think. This eve I will start a new thread telling who got what. That will be where finished folder photos can be posted.

Thank you everyone who is taking part.
Mark

Eric, you got spalted maple burl and redwood burl

Hey Butch,
In order to keep the thread from getting too long I just started a new one. I put it in shop talk instead of custom. Not sure which one is the correct place. I just started the thread telling who is taking part and what was sent to them. This should take you to the thread. Can you use 1/8" scales on your razors? Are you still making any? I ask because I have a weird set 7" long that is blackline spalted maple burl left over that you would be welcome to use. Just let me know.
Thanks, Mark

Mark has ask me to try some of this wood.

I need a piece - 12'' X 12"" X 36"" --- or what ever ya got handy.....

Mark I appreciate the offer and hope I can do something with it......;):D

Thanks!

.

i've been looking at a lot of burl lately
on the web
on the forums
on knives in the raw,
stabilized and unstabilized.
and in my own shop for some time

some beautiful stuff.
but we as knife makers are getting very specific about what we will use on a knife or put on a knife.
the main reason is , " if you're going to make it, make it beautiful"
so it follows , the wood has to be great.
exotic
high contrasts, light dark,eyes,grain, lines,spalt
interesting to the eye

with the stabilizing process we can now use spalted wood. WOW
spalted wood is so different. totally random patterns
a whole new meaning to beautiful wood

i might look at twenty pieces all similar, but one or two will stand out of the bunch or "run of the mill" , so so stuff

even though some of the burled pieces would be fantastic a few years ago and highly sought after, now they are just nice burl.

Todd,
Your wood is going to be a bit smaller than your request. I sent the spalted maple scales and some curly maple I am calling Bog maple. It was an old piece buried in the muck where a stream came to the ocean in Northern California. Unusual colors and great 3d curl.

You are correct about the woods used by the knife makers these days. It has changed a lot even in the last 3 years. I still get a lot of people who want the cheap lightly figured stuff, but the serious makers usually want the unusual and most dramatic looking woods.

I don't know if you have noticed, but the damascus steel patterns have followed the same trend. Or maybe I am just beginning to notice.
