I'm doing a large wood carving from a spalted maple log that will end up being about 6-8 cubic feet. Any ideas on how to stabilize something this size ?

cut it into small pieces. send it to KnG get it back glue it together and carve away!:D

no seriously you might wanna try to ask a place like WSSI or KnG and see what thelargest cross section is they can stabilize, may be very expensive though.

what about just a ton of wood hardener or salad bowl finish for a few weeks?

Mark, Call Mike at WSSI and see how big he can do. I know he does whole stems and frames for boats.
