Hello, can you stabilize wood with pin holes? Will the pin holes be infused with resin, thus make the wood useable ? Thanks

If I understand you right, you want to have some wood stabilized that has holes drilled in it. The resin will probably get in the holes, but you can easily re-drill the holes.

Tom's right if that's the case. If you just mean tiny holes and voids, if the stabilizing is professionaly done, it will probably fill almost every void throughout the piece. I have run into a couple voids that needed to be filled with super-glue after being stabilized and shaped, but it wasn't a deal breaker.

I was told by K&G, and the results matched, that wood with open voids would not have those voids filled during the stabilizing process. The wood in question was redwood burl and buckeye burl. Both came back with lots of open voids, pin holes. As I cut the blocks into scales, there were voids a plenty.

Now, this could totally be contigent on how big the voids are....but some of these were very small....like sewing needle diameter. Other, larger voids, we empty as well.

I've had better luck with wood stabilized by WSSI in this regards...but still similar results.

I recently acquired a some professionally stabilized koa that was heavily reduced in price because of a few small pinholes

The stabilization did not fill the pinholes at all. That said, the iridescent grain is more than worth dealing with a few pinholes. The seller (burl source) said the stabilizing process should prevent the pinholes from being a structural problem.

Stabilizing from the major providers will not fill holes and gaps. These can be filled with thin epoxy resin or CA after stabilizing if desired.
