does anyone do it themselves without any expensive equipment? if yes how do you do it? and does anyone stabilize wood that is alreay hard? thanks

I finally had some that turned out pretty well, but they were small scales, I leave big pieces to the experts and probably will not do again. I used wood hardner, put the scales in a glass jar, covered with liquid, heated with a heat gun until was bubbling hot, note lots of volitile gas coming off no open flame be careful. Seal lid tight and let set about 2-3 weeks.

I tried some shorter times and did not get full penetration, time will depend on the wood, soft will not take as long.

Hard woods do not have any open pore space so you really cannot harden them, you are replacing the air and moisture in the pore space with sealer. I would just finish with and oil or other finish to seal the wood.
