Hi,

Fast question:I'm going to do my first stacked leather handle. What type of glue would you suggest between the leather pcs. Not water based I am guessing.

Thanks

Ken

contact cement i get mine at the dollar store there all the same once you seal the leather it wont penatrate anyway.

I've used yellow carpenters glue on a couple but on the last one I used 4 parts glue and 1 part water then I mixed in a few drops of dark leather dye and it looked better. I mixed up enough glue so that I could soak at least one or two washers while putting one on the stick.

I finished it off with 4 deep coats of spar varnish. It is fairly dark but also very stable.

i have used everything from a waterbased contact cement to rubber cement but i finish off with superglue to seal everything. the water based cement i used was made by duco. they also make a contact cement in a green tube that would work fine too. here is a link to it http://mysite.verizon.net/ress6fq6/id31.html

"soaked" as opposed to stacking them "dry" ? Never thought of that. Somehow I just assumed that they would be glued one on top of another then sealed and finished some how.

it was more of an experiment in stabilizing the leather but the spar varnish worked great for that. The Washers I soaked were 1/4" thick so they really didn't 'soak' up that much glue in the short period they were soaking.
