Stacked leather handle?

Well...all of the leather handled Ka-Bars, and Ontarios I've had the leather shrank over over the course of a few years out in the bush in a temperate rain forest...lots of time in creeks and rains. The hand guards also started rattling. However after nine years or so I have not had those issues with my SOG SG1.
 
My standard KaBar is now 25 years old. Bought it back just after the knife was re-introduced. I've used hairdryers and Sno Seal on it several times during those 25 years, and the washers are still tight.
