Stacked leather handles

I am eagerly awaiting the re-release of Blackjack Knives' Model 1-7". I'll probably pick one up with stacked leather handles. Does anyone here know how to take care of this type handle? Any tips on possibly waterproofing it?
 
I have a few "tools" with SLH. I rub mine with boiled Linseed oil once a year. The oldest one is a hatchet I got in 1970. It still looks new as do the others.
