stag crack question

Mac,
When I looked it over I did not see any issues. There are colors and lines always running through stag as the guys pointed out that show up in pic's but are just in the stag. The pictures bring out everything pretty bold but do not worry if it is a crack just send it back. Will cover the shipping. There are nataural lines and I think that is all it is.
I try and point things out as best I can but when I do a group of knives I do miss things sometimes, mostly spelling as I am sure many of you have seen. I had a D' Holder knife with a flaw in the sheath I missed and the guy emailed me to look at the picture and there it was . D' Holder made a new sheath and we got it to him right away.
Any way no worries let me know if a problem and will take care of it. Will be in Vegas for Shot Show so if no answer I will get back to you. Also just informed Russ who will be in the shop while I am gone.
Thanks guys!
Dan

+1

First rate. That's what 'customer service' is all about. No worries at all.

To me cracks are normal for stag as long as they're healthy cracks and not in critical areas like the pins(especially) or the shield. When they are what I would call healthy none growing cracks and in the right places then they contribute to the beauty! Just my humble opinion! Having said that yours seems to be at the bolster which would bother me some!

Nicely done Dan, ...this is the type of service that will keep a business going, great service with honesty...and for that I would always pay that little bit extra for any day
To me the photo shows a crack, but dont usually these stabalise once they initialy move and tend to stay as that?...the only thing that will realy get things going again is maybe if you drop it, the crack may get a severe enough start again?

Thanks but prob. not nessesary as I havent recieved it yet. I'd rather not embarrass myself over nothing if possible :foot:

I'd already written Dan by the time you posted but as you can see, all's well.

Dan wrote me back again later last night to say thanks so don't worry in any way that you've worn out your welcome with "Plaza". Dan and I are friends and like to compare notes on our hockey teams anyway so it gives us a chance to catch up. I normally alert him to potential issues if I see them as he ordinarily doesn't have much time to review the forums.

Let us know how everything works out.

I'll be interested to see a macro photo with circles and arrows pointing to the crack. I can't see a crack in the supplied images.

Timely thread for me.
I was at a gun show last weekend & found some really nice fixed blades for sale that came out of a collection. One that caught my eye had beautifully matched stag scales & it definitely had my interest. But looking at it closer, it had what I'd call stress cracks at 6 out of the 8 pins on the scales. Major bummer, as I was likely going to grab it. The knife was new, never used & the seller said it was probably bought about 20 years ago. (he wasn't original owner) Price was $275.
I was contemplating still going for it & see how much he would reduce it, but I didn't know if those cracks would get larger over time. Even if they didn't, what I saw was bad enough that it likely would bother me & I walked away.
So a couple ?s I was wondering about. Is it likely the cracks appeared over time with the stag shrinking a bit? Although I didn't see any signs of shrinkage anywhere on the scales, my guess is these cracks were not there when the knife was made. Although I didn't recognize the name of the maker, the knife was very well made.
Also, is it likely the cracks would get worse over time?

Minor stress cracks in stag are quite common and most in my experience have been very stable. That said, I don't think that's a crack on the Ohta. Looks more like a beveled grind surface where the scale was contoured to make a smooth transition into the bolster. Ohta's hafting work is excellent - I doubt there will be any problems.

Well, I got the Ohta in the mail today and Rick called it....the pic shows a line where two planes meet when the stag was fitted. No crack and everything looks and works just perfect. Here's some pics I just took:

There's the culprit...now it's refelctive! :D (top right corner of left scale). Boy do I feel dumb :foot:

Thank you Dan at Plaza for a great knife!

I'm glad that everything turned out well.

I really like the look of that knife. Sort of like a single blade stockman.

Good on ya for putting it to work, even if you are using a knife purse. :D

Damn fine knife:thumbup:
And I think you were right to voice concerns, but as the Bard wrote hundreds of years ago, All's Well that Ends Well:D
