Culpepper dyed some stag tapers and scales for me and they come back black. I need to get down to the amber. My problem is that they are really textured (popcorn) and I dont want to sand that off. Any tips? Thanks.

You're going to have to sand it down. How far depends on how deep the dye goes.

Buy a sisal wheel for your buffer. It will get own to the amber pretty quickly an not leave sanding marks. I have had hundreds of lbs dyed and it is what I use. You may also take a bit of thinner on a rag and rub off the excess dye...which is what the black color really is. I think the amber dying process actually stabilizes the stag a bit and hardens it a bit....allowing it to come to a higher luster than normal stag. It is a good material to work.

Before using any type of abrasive.....and acrewing up the stag, try the methods
they recommend,...or denatured alcohol,...or just dry buffing with an old towel and
some compound.
