Stag lockback set

A little Schrade Walden History :D
HW.jpg

Someones pulling my leg. A lot older and uglier. Forgot a lot since then, but I still like to tinker with pocket knives. I really miss my friends at Imperial Schrade. A lot of knowledge left when that facility closed down.

No secrets..what you see is what you get with me...my address pnlarry@chariot.net.au I think Mr Vickery should 'out' himself on here also with a photo <recent>! He managed to find my photo on my work website in Oz.. then blew it up larger than life and sent it back to me.....little Na Hampshire bloodhound that he is.....
I would love to hear from you Herman.Have you ever been to Oz? If you come to my neck of the woods you can hop in a cage at Neptune Island just out of our Boston Bay and be surrounded by 5, 18' white pointer sharks and that gets the old adrenalin pumping!! They are frequently little leg pullers as well You're O.K. so long as they dont mistake you for a seal.!You imagine being surrounded by 5 mothers' in law and you can get an idea of how frightening it all is! The next stop south from me is the South Pole mate. Numerous Southern Right Whales and their youngsters swim past my abode on their annual trek south.

Camper17, is this LB7 some of your work? It came with a sheath covered with Rattlesnake skin and is the only one I've ever seen:

Is it true that each knife Herman customises has his name and date inscribed on the liners?Maybe worth a closer check Redshanks. Beautiful LB7 Stag and file work..not sure about that sheath though is it rough to touch? Hoo Roo

Thanks for the information. I am new on bladeforums.com, but am learning some on how to get around on it. It has so much information. I thought I had some knowledge of Schrade product. I know very little compared to the information available here. In years past I sure wish I had documented the exposure and conversations I had with old timers in the Schrade factory. Oh well, hindsight has always been 20/20, so we push forward. I have some of the old Schrade almanac's, will have to get them out one of these days and see if I have the copy you are refering to. I know I had some mention in some of them. Thanks again for the info.

Some of the earlier pieces I did may not have had my name inside the pile side liner. Most did. I am almost sure the LB-7 you have is not my work. I have my own color I use on Stag. This knife only has scorched handle color. Even over the years my color would not have looked like this one. I really believe this one came from someone else. Look closely inside the pile side liner, could have been a stamp I used,"H.WILLIAMS". On later knives I used a panagraph, most have a year date. I know that Danny Jones experimented with some workbacks when he was in the sample room, this was before he became Imperial Schrade,s Plant Manager. What he did would have resembled the filework I did. I don't know how much he did on this project, I only know that he once told me he had been working on some workback pieces. Most of the pieces I did was not in a uniform pattern as this one is. When I did filework I tried not to stick to a uniform pattern. I had my style, but not a uniform pattern on every knife. I have no pieces on hand to post a picture. Maybe someone out ther who does have one of my workback knives will read this and post a picture.

Herman,
As you can tell we are alway hungry for information. Any help you can give us is wonderful. I have almost all the almanac's posted on my web site so need to did for them (unless you have Vol #1! ?). We are trying to get as much info posted about the companies as possible keeping it ordered is a bit tricky.
Ya your name is all over the almanac's.
Thanks again.

Mr. Williams, we really do appreciate your posting and giving us information. I am sure that you have much more knowledge about obscure details than you realize. Many of these details are not available to collectors here because little was written down at the time, and not all that was written survives.

Primary sources of information outside of the surviving archives is very hard to find. It is amazing how one little clue from someone who was at some point affiliated with the company can pull together fragmented research.

Case in point is the insight we gained by the postings of Frank Giorgianni's son, Tom. He was able to directly answer some questions and even took a few directly to his father for us. As collectors, we consider such information priceless. It is the story behind the knives, as much as the quality and variety of the knives themselves which make them interesting.

Since others are asking questions, I would like to ask something that has puzzled me for some time. DIssatisfied with the sparse information available in existing reference books, I am doing some rather extensive research into the Schrade Scrimshaw knives. Having worked with Schrade doing embellishments, do you know anything about the progression of Schrade artists beyond Mr. Giorgianni and his successor Tom Duffey? In my research, I have found designs by other artists and mentions in product development records of other inhouse artists (Kelly). Some names found are traceable to artists of note (Linda Karst Stone, Glenn Chambers), but some works are either unattributed, or the artist is obscure outside of a few examples. Major sets like the Whalers and Presidential series we have some information on the artists. Mr. Feeney was one of those. Can you discuss this subject?

Michael

Hey Bill,
Hope you are enjoying the Barlow. They are getting expensive to obtain for customizing. I certainly am enjoying this forum. So much information. Thank you for putting me on to it. I have let my identity slip, but iI guess thats all right. You take care.

I enjoy your presence here as well. I have one of your recent pieces. A nice 98OT with that rich red sambar stag. Interesting to me that color is done by you in the "scorching" process. You put a fine scald on that stag. I admire the high quality stag and how you choose to present it on both handles. Great work you do.

Here's an example of a beautiful workback (and front and inside!) knife by Mr Williams. it's a heck of an honor to have you visiting with us sir!
