lambertiana, thanks for the correction. I wrongly assumed that since antler is covered with fur, initially, and is cast off it would be like hair or whisker. The grades certainly vary enormously, an Ohta I recently got has hardly any pores -being Sambar popcorn. Yet other knives can be smooth or full of pores.
David, point taken I didn't mean to imply anything by 'only'. I'm just rather annoyed by centre pin cracks on 2 or 3 GECs I've had, 1 replaced the others not. Older knives may have thinner handles, a key point is the quality of the bone in the first place, and the treatment process.. Older knives were likely not expected to have a long life as they were used frequently and replaced accordingly. Stag though, always seems to have occupied a premier ground and really does seem to be more durable.
