Where do you guys buy stag and do any of you get it through mail order sight unseen?

Joe, stag is one thing I have never bought without looking at it first. Shows are by far the best way to see a good selection.

As a newbie I recently made the mistake of buying my first set of sambar stag off ebay several weeks ago. Even though pictures were posted along with the auction they didn't show very good detail due to the poor lighting.

Big mistake made and a big $42.00 lesson learned.

Joe, contact Luca at Elen Hunting. He's a great guy and a good friend. He has a huge selection and many varieties of stag.I have bought a bunch from him , but I still buy some really good stuff at shows.Dave:)

You must have sent out some kind of vibe, Dave. I just ordered two carvers from them right before reading your post.:D Are you going to be at the Lakeland show in February?

Go to your local butcher just prior to deer season and ask them to save the antlers for you. Here they just throw them away when the customer doesn't want them. You end up with a very wide assortment of sizes and shapes. (Guard this secret closely)

I know a guy that processes tons of them every year, thanks for the heads up. It's not sambar, but it has to be good for something.

I have used whitetail horn before and it doesn't come close to Sambar or Axis stag. About the only part of whitetail that has any character is the crown but the brow tines get in the way unless that is what you are looking for.

Make a couple of friends that hunt. If they arent trophy a lot of people just toss them out.

I've bought some very nice wood from Chuck before. The thng I like about buying from AKs is that they will cut the wood to whtever size you need and just charge you by weight. I have bought single blocks from Chuck and big pieces from Exotic Wood Group and have been delighted with both. I just happened to find a couple of brow tine carvers on Elen that really caught my eye. There is another carver on the AKS site that I am lusting after. I am not going to try to buy scales on line. I want to see those in person.
