I like to buy stag when you can walk up and see it first hand, but my supply is poor and I'm looking for a good place on the net that sells quality stag, along with amber stag. Where do you guys get your stag??

Thank you,

Bill

I second alpha knife supply if you aren't going to buy it in person...I've always received exactly what the pics show and he's a great guy to deal with.

I asked Wayne Goddard what sambar stag cost when he started making knives in the early 70's. $2.50 was the going price back then. And we think gas prices have shot up.

ok...this is a really stupid question but....what makes stag great....is it the color...a piece that has a nice shape to it...is all stag created equally....how are the different types of stag different and why the price differences....i guess what i'm asking is what makes a pice of stag good.....ryan

I've always bought stag from Elen Hunting. Lucca Sannino is a great guy to deal with. If I tell him what I'm looking for and it's not on the website, he usually has it in stock and will get it for me. Haven't tried Mother of Pearl Co. website yet, though...

Mail order stag is a tough one. I bought 3 pieces once from ElenHunting and even after viewing the pictures from the side and end view I was still unhappy when I got them because they
were so curved they were unusable so I sent them back and had to call. It cost me the freight back and the aggrivation. Their policy is no refunds so I had to order more.

The best way to get scales is to cut them yourself from a large straight section. Matched color sets are almost impossible to find otherwise. The vender will buy the stag already sliced into scales but the colors dont match. The real bad thing about this is you dont know they dont match until its already finished out on the knife.

Mother Of Pearl Co. is now (again) called Culpepper And Company, Inc.

They are good folks to work with as are the Bybees at Alpha Knife Supply.

Of course there are other suppliers who are good to do business with, I just have always had good service and product from both the Culpeppers and the Bybees.
