Stag...

My dad sent the following to me today:
On the 8th day, after God had rested, he created the Sambar Stag for the express purpose of using their antlers for knife handles. Therefore all other handle materials are considered 'Satanic' and sinful and unclean. On the 9th day he included various other antlered animals but did cast a jaundiced eye towards Micarta, preferably Gold. Thus sayeth...
I dunno 'bout the rest of you, but that certainly sounds like a bunch of widsom to me.

Pardon me. Photographic evidence:

No argument here. As I've said before, I'm not quite as bad as your dad - a nice piece of buckeye burl, amboyna burl, or even maple burl will definitely get my full and complete attention - but I do love a nice piece of gnarly stag.

LOL, 'tis true, definitely words of wisdom--may more stag be in your future soon KL... ;)

Will any 'old' stag do for the purposes of discussion (sans finger grooves on this one), or must the stag be new...inquiring minds need to know...;)

Aw, Sheldon, for about the millionth time you make me wish I'd spent all my money on Randalls back in the 70s instead of guns. A couple of the guns are worth more than I paid for them. Most aren't.

Sameal, my fern, like I said when I sent 'cha the #25-6 to fondle (nice stag center on that one btw), these days my mind is set on acquiring as much Montana waterfront acreage as I can get into; and if that means setting free a few nice stag-handled RMK's in the process, so be it...;)

Keep your eyes peeled, it could be quite a show...(hmm, maybe I shoulda posted that last comment in the 'Wanted to trade: knives for land' sub-forum...) :D

p.s. That's an early 1960's unmarked SS (name etched) #4-7 w/NS hilt, deep choil, seven spacers, (killer stag), DA endcap, and BB Maurice Johnson (owner blackened) RB sheath...a velly nice set up :)

Crossing my fingers (and toes) must have worked, because a Randall #5-5" with a gorgeous Stag handle just showed up.

I think it was my dad who coined the following expression: "there is no such thing in this universe as bad Stag."

Indeed, I think your dad was a wise man KL--still, I'd like to see what your newest looks like when properly photographed. From what I've heard, 'good' stag can be hard to find; although, I haven't personally found that to be the case as of yet...

Melvin-Purvis, you wrote:

While I am not sure if this qualifies as being properly photographed, I took the following snapshots this morning:

Ken, it's pretty funny, really - when you posted that photo I was having breakfast at a Perkins restaurant not far from Rocky Mountain National Park with a friend who thinks $40 is "too much to spend for a knife."

His reaction? "Beautiful." So I guess I'm not the only one who feels that way.

A gorgeous, sunny day here, but we never got above tree line due to the weather. Oh well.

Ken,

Oh my! Nice work bud...now I miss 'er even more...:D

Wow, nice photography, nice knife...kudos!

Shel

A few months ago a fellow FF asked me "So, what do you do?" (first time I ever heard that in Montana btw), and not knowing what to say (because, well, other than the FD calls, hiking, snowboarding, and a little fishing I really don't do much at all anymore)...so, I said 'Author' *shrugs*

"Really?" sez he, "What do you write about?" Well, we eventually got around to my Randall Knives reference book (yes, the Randall Shop carries it), then he sez he has an old Randall knife that a client gave to his outfitter/guide father some 50 years ago...

I later took a look at it, but all he really wanted to know was 'value', as he needed some coin. I suggested (strongly) back then that he hold onto it, but hard-pressed, I gave him some figures. Thursday, he brought the knife to our weekly meeting, stuck it in my hand, and asked for for the low end figure...

Esplaining(sic) that it was worth more, he replied "Probably, but you know the market better than I do, and you were honest when we spoke about it last...so, do you want it or not?" Anyhoo, here she be, mid fifties all the way--and in Vernon's favorite handle type...Sambar Stag baby, and pinned Sambar Stag at that! :D

How do you know it is unmarked stainless steel? How do you know the sheath was 'owner blackened'?
