Staglon Beauties!

885 and 897. I gave the 885 to my father sometime in the 90s after he lost the pocket knife that he had carried for decades, then inherited it back when he passed. I found the 897 "new in box" at the local knife shop a few years ago.

My one and only submission, a Bear & Son sharpfinger copy I got for Christmas a couple years ago.

I like the knife better than I expected to, but it's definitely not a very great showing for imitation stag.

I have no clue how they colored it, but if I didn't know any better I'd think they torched it.

Snapped the clip blade off using it for a screwdriver on a motorcycle over 50 years ago. Carried it broken for several years as a reminder not to repeat that performance, plus money was tight. A kind porch member gifted me a replacement.

Late Western (a division of Camillus by then).
Western-WD237-Premium-Stockman.jpg
Not a Camillus era example.
Has the pre-date code 1961-1977 tang stamp.
Since the date code made the "USA" smaller, added the model number and added a letter date code on a 3rd line, starting in 1977, (1977 A; 1978 B; 1979 C; 1980 D; and so on) until the start of the Coleman era. (I'm pretty sure it was Coleman that ended the date codes, not Camillus.) I would guess yours, like my 742, dates between 1961 and 1976.

The date coded knives used the same stamp design. My "D" date code L66 (picture not available. I don't have access to it.) has the same tang stamp as the 062.

It looks like an early 90's Camillus example to me, note the font and the SS blades.
Here is an early 90's L66 I found online.

Chief, where have you been?
I think I haven't seen any posts from you lately.

Thanks, Neal, it is really one of the prettiest and smoothest knives I own, worlds above a Buck 110.

Looking at the price sticker on the 897 box brought back memories, and gave me a chuckle. I remember paying $15 & change for my 885UH back in 1970, and hoping that my wife didn't find out how much I paid for that thing.:)

I agree your L66 is post date code. 😁👍

Your stockman, however has a different tang stamp: The "USA" is the same size as "Western", and no model number.
If you look at the model number tang stamp on the pile side of the clip point. If it has stainless blades it will have "S -" before the model number.
I've seen some Western folders with clean carbon steel blades that look like they are stainless.

I don't know if Western ever coated the folder's blades with lacquer like they did the L66 and other fixed blades.

At least pre Coleman era, all the Western fixed blades had a 1095 blade. I don't know if Coleman or Camillus switched to stainless or offered a choice of 1095 and whatever stainless they used. (440A for Camillus?)
