I just got a new roll of heat treat foil and it's different from what I've been using.
This foil is slightly thicker and a little harder to roll and seal up!
After heat treat the blades looked just like they usually do, sort of a dull gray.
My first batch of D2 blades had a VERY hard layer on them about .003 deep. I was hell to remove! I wish I could somehow put this layer on the finished edge!! The blades came out at the usuall 63Rc prior to Cryo and temper.
I have to think it was the new foil. I prepped the blades and used the same steel I aways do! I have had "leeks" in the foil before but nothing ever resulted in this hard layer!! I'm going to try the foil again on some punches and Dies tomorow at work and see what happens.
Has anyone else experienced this????

Neil, what kind of oven do you have???????

I have had this happen when I didnt squeeze all the air out of the package before burning them. D-2 is the worst for the hard scale! Put a piece of brown paper in the package with the blades to burn out the excess oxygen and see if that helps.

L6,
I have an older Paragon, a newer Paragon and an old but reliable Blue M that I use for tempering.

Rob,
I never had a scale problem before! They just turned gray... I'll give the paper a try and fold the foil better on the next batch! The scale added about 1 hour on to finishing each blade!!!!
Thanks,
Neil
