Is there a list somewhere of people who heat treat stainless blades? I know TKS does it, are there any others?

Thanks,
Shawn

Paul Bos in Idaho

There are industrial heat treaters all over the country that can do blades. Most have a minimum order. TKS actually just batches blades and sends them to one.

Todd Begg uses one in Washington.

Mike Erie in Colorado sends a couple hundred blades a month to an industrial heat treater. If you are using the same steel as whatever model he's working on at the time he'll usually let you add them to his pile for a buck or two each.

Sorry but TKS does thier own in house H/T and cryo treatments. I go there often and asked a lot of questions when i got my kiln. Good folks and good work.
There is also Peters Heat Treating in Pa. They also do good work.

Peters' Heat Treat in Pennsylvania. They do an awesome job. Cost is $16 a blade + shipping. $10 a piece for 6 or more (but less than 20 lbs.)

Paul Bos prices are . $14.00 for a single blade or up to his minimum of 20 blades for $87.00 . So if you send in 20 plus , the cost becomes $4.65 per blade . Plus shipping plus another $10.00 for mismatched steel . Last time I looked his web site prices were not updated but I received his new price list from my last group sent . These prices listed above were from Aug. 2008 . His turn around time for me anyway has been 5 days from sending to receiving them back .

I've heard good words about Peters, but the price of $16 per blade and 10 per blade in a quantity sounds a bit high...I do folders, not long knives.....

I send mine to Paul Bos...and will admit to as many as 200+ at a time...rectangles that will be blades, or springs on slipjoints, but in that quantity, very reasonable in per unit price....also he tests each piece for Rc hardness.....

Biasdly, I wouldn't want to send my steel to anyone but Paul....and might well do Peters....but quantity does win out price-wise over per blade price....

Paul has a minimum and I assume Peters may as well.....

If you don't do your own HT comfortably, use the best.......

Paul does not do oil quenced steel (high carbon non-stainless) something about no salt pots available (or Bonneville Salt Flats) or something like that (smile).

I just got back 5 blades from Paul. They came in around $17.00 each plus shipping and handling. Total was just under $100.00.

You can sure save money if you send him 20+ blades at one time.

You will have to look hard to find better service. I use him for all my stainless blades.

Okay, I actually need to clarify, Peters' is $60 flat fee for up to #20 pounds (must send over 6 pieces) and of course they have to be all the same steel type.

Interesting Eric, My last group to Paul weight out at 7.5 #'s according to UPS . It consisted of 22 blades , 19 of ATS-34 and 3 of A-2 . Total cost was $128.00 which included my ship to him and back to me .
He only does air hardened steal now due to all the EPA rules and insurance cost .

Aug. of 2008 was the last group I sent to Paul , after his price change . It consisted of 22 blades , 19 of ATS-34 and 3 of A-2 . Total cost was $128.00 . You are correct , the more the better on cost . It's just tuff to do so many , feels like production work . Now that is gross .
